Yamaha YSP-4100
>> [Background music] Hi, I'm Matthew Moskovciac, Senior Associate Editor at CNET. And we're gonna take a look at the Yamaha YSP-4100. This is part of Yamaha's digital sound projector line, which means it uses forty individual drivers to reflect sound off walls and create a surround sound effect from just one speaker. The YSP-4100 is much larger than competing sound bar systems. Coming in at forty inches wide and over eight inches tall, it's tall enough that you really can't place it in front of a TV as it's gonna block the screen. So you're gonna need to find another place to put the sound bar or wall mount it. Around back you'll see the YSP-4100's extensive connectivity including four HDMI inputs, three digital audio inputs and two analog audio inputs. They're even component and composite video inputs and the YSP-4100 can upconvert those signals over its HDMI output. The Yamaha also comes with a wireless iPod accessory that you connect to the bottom of your iPod and it allows you to wirelessly stream audio to the sound bar. Altogether the YSP-4100 along with the step-up YSP-5100 are the most fully featured sound bars we've ever tested. As for sound quality, we've found that Yamaha's sound reflecting technology is still the best at creating a virtual sound environment, which means you're gonna hear sounds coming from the sides of your home theater even though there's only one speaker. Overall the YSP-4100 was most impressive on movies but it also sounded pretty good with CDs which many sound bars have trouble with. The main problem with the YSP-4100 is it's very expensive with a street price of about seventeen hundred dollars. Competing sound bar home theater systems are available for as little as two hundred to three hundred dollars and while they might not sound as impressive as the YSP-4100 they're gonna be good enough for most people. On the other hand Yamaha also offers a step-up YSP-5100 with a nearly identical feature set. And in our testing we found the sound quality of the YSP-4100 to be basically the same. So if you're into Yamaha's high end brand of digital sound projectors and you have the budget, you're better off saving a few hundred bucks and going with the YSP-4100.
