Microsoft doesn't want you swearing in Xbox One videos

Microsoft has confirmed that it is cracking down on profanities in the Upload Studio app on the Xbox One. Swearing in your uploaded videos could lead to a temporary "loss of account privileges".

It's official: swear too much in the videos you share using Microsoft's Upload Studio on the Xbox One, and your Xbox Live account privileges could be temporarily revoked.

"Excessive profanity and other Code of Conduct violations will be enforced upon. On Xbox One, we have a more sophisticated system of enforcement," a Microsoft spokesperson told CNET. "As a result, if someone misbehaves on the service, we may only suspend some of their privileges on Xbox Live, such as access to certain apps or use of certain features."

After some initial confusion, with reports of the bans first appearing on Reddit, Microsoft has clarified that it is not directly monitoring Skype text or voice chats and will not ban users for any profane language in their private conversations. Microsoft's spokesperson told CNET, "To be clear, the Xbox Live Policy & Enforcement team does not monitor direct peer-to-peer communications, like Skype chats and calls."

Xbox Forums users aren't happy, though. Initially, the temporary restrictions were handed out with minimal justification, with banned users seeing a message stating they could not use Skype or Upload Studio due to "past behaviour".

Initially, users didn't know how long their bans would persist for and had no feedback from Microsoft staff. It quickly emerged that "excessive profanity" in Upload Studio videos would lead to a 24-hour ban from any Xbox Live services, including Skype. The ban is also being handed out without warning — so you'd better learn quickly, and rein in the swearing in your next Xbox One video.
