Troubleshooting Safari 1.0: Some banking sites do not work

CNET staff

Now that Apple has released the final 1.0 iteration of Safari, we are already beginning to receive bug reports and a few letters of disappointment that critical compatibility changes were not implemented in this release. According to Apple's documentation, Safari 1.0 offers the following enhancements over its most recent beta predecessor:

  • Safari is Mac OS X default browser
  • AutoTab loads folders quickly
  • Sync your bookmarks with iSync
  • Available in all Mac OS X languages
  • More AppleScripts available
  • Increased standards compatibility

While Safari has reportedly gained support for a number of financial institutions that were previously incompatible, some major banking Web sites are still non-functional. One MacFixIt reader writes:

"I still have no access to on-line banking. At least as far as SunTrust Bank is concerned. Returns 404 error when trying to move around inside secure site. I'm not changing banks so I can use Apple software. This problem has existed since the first Safari beta. I have sent continuous bug reports to Apple to no avail. No big deal since Camino and Mozilla both work flawlessly."
