More on missing third-generation iPod features

Last week we reported that some third generation iPods that were updated with version 2.2 of the iPod firmware did not obtain the new features offered in the upgrade. Instead, users are forced to perform an iPod reset, then apply the updater before obtaining the additional functionality.

For some readers, a restore may not be necessary -- the additional features are simply turned off and need to be activated in the "Settings" menu:

MacFixIt reader Lin writes "After checking my 3G iPod, and failing to find the Voice Memo, iPhoto Import, or Sleep features, I thought I was going to have to reset. However, I stumbled across the 'Reset All Settings' option at the bottom of the 'Settings' menu, and clicked it without giving it much thought. Then, without much thought, I was looking under the 'Main Menu' option, and discovered the 'missing' features listed with 'Off' selected. When I clicked 'On' they appeared in the Main Menu.

I don't know if "Resetting All Settings" activated these features, or if they were there all the time and just shut off. But I'm sure glad I didn't have to go through the longer process of resetting and reloading the whole iPod. I wonder if others may simply need to switch On these features rather than reset the whole "she-bang."

MacFixIt reader Pablo substantiates: "The menus listed did not appeared in my ipod. I checked the menus and found in the Settings > Main Menu that all the items (Photo Import, Voice memo or Sleep) were there but not selected. I change the selection and I have them on my iPod with no reset."
