iMovie 5.0.2 (#2): Digital converter issues

MacFixIt reader Terrell Smith reports that Sony's Media Converter DVMC-DA1 will not work with iMovie HD 5 (5.0.2). It still works with iMovie 4 and FCE, but not iMovie HD 5. iMovie HD 5 import says "No Camera Attached" and export says "Cannot export to camera."

Terrell writes:

"It appears that a number of other analog to digital converters are also no longer recognized. My guess is that the 'Make a Magic Movie' feature broke firewire devices that are not cameras.

"Since the Sony converter was recommended and sold by Apple on their site, it is frustrating that a $79 upgrade keeps a $500 converter box from working.

"Today I talked with Apple Care. They told me, "If enough people call in and complain about this, engineering may fix it in a future update."

"One workaround: Import using iMovie 4, export from iMovie 5 by checking 'Play through to camera' in the Preferences."
