Phraseology is a text editor for the iPad that teaches you about your writing style. On the surface, the app -- currently priced at $1.99 for a "limited time" -- is a simple text editor. It features a blank canvas and an expanded keyboard that includes undo and redo buttons along with multiple and useful cursor and selection control keys. You can write in plain-text or Markdown mode to preview your HTML output, and in settings you can sync to Dropbox or iCloud to backup your Phraseology docs. The app also supplies a handful of font choices and sharing options, including Drafts, a note-taking app from the developer, Agile Tortoise.
The above is standard fare for a text editor, and Phraseology stands out for three additional modes: arrange, inspect, and speech syntax highlighting. With these tools, you can learn a lot about your writing style.
The arrange tool lets you easily move and delete sentences and paragraphs without needing to copy and paste, always a clumsy endeavor on the iPad. At the top of arrange mode, you can select to view your document grouped by sentence or paragraph and can then drag to rearrange or tap to delete. For each sentence or paragraph, you are given word and character counts.
The inspect tool shows you advanced stats of your document, down the average number of words per sentence and syllables per word. It also shows how many nouns, verbs, determiners, prepositions, and conjunctions you used; your most repeated root words to help you avoid overuse; and various scores for the overall readability of your writing.
With syntax highlighting, you can choose different types of speech -- nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, determiners, prepositions, and conjunctions -- to highlight to help you refine your writing style.
