Checking out new apartments or schools? Here's a tip that makes looking up how far away a location is from you even faster.

Do you use Google Maps for directions often? How about when you're looking for a new apartment or even school for your children? Almost every time you'll probably wonder how far away the selected place is from your home or work. Luckily, Google Maps allows you to set these addresses so you don't have to type them in each time.

Here's how to get started:

Step 1: Open your Web browser to Google Maps. Make sure you're signed into your account.

Step 2: Click the My places button near the upper left-hand side of the page.

You should see a link that says "Set home location," followed by "Set work location." In this example, the home location has been set and just reads "Home."

Step 3: Click the link and enter your address, then press Save.

Now each time you go to look for the distance between your home or work and somewhere else, you can simply type "home" or "work" and the auto-complete drop-down will appear with your address in it. Just click on it and Google Maps will fill it in for you.

Here are some other places you may want to use Google Maps to find distances and directions for:

Restaurants, shopping, grocery stores, gas stations, parks, transportation like bus lines or subways, gyms, children's activities, libraries, movie theaters, trails, doctor offices, hospitals, dentists, fire stations, police departments, churches, dry cleaners, laundromats, banks, roller rinks, gun ranges, airports, hotels, theme parks, beaches, souvenir shops, bars, clubs, and liquor stores.
