1Password is a popular password management app for iOS and OS X users. 1Password 4.1 was recently released, bringing with it a new URL scheme feature. The URL schemes allow you to append the letters "op" to any URL in mobile Safari to have the page opened in 1Password. In turn you can quickly log into the site using your saved password information in 1Password. The new feature is a huge time saver. You no longer have to switch back and forth from Safari and 1Password to copy and paste your password.

Even though adding two letters to the beginning of a URL is fairly effortless, thanks to a bookmarklet posted by Federico Viticci on MacStories, you can launch any page in Safari with a single tap. Make sure you're using 1Password 4.1 or this will not work!

  • What you'll need to do on your iOS device is create a random bookmark. The page you're adding doesn't really matter, as we are going to change the name and address in the next step. Make sure you save it to your Bookmarks Bar for quick access in the future.

  • After you've created the bookmark, go back into your bookmarks and select Edit. Select the bookmark you just saved, change the name to something easy to remember (1pass or the like), and then change the address to:

    javascript:window.location='op'+(window.location.href);

  • Save the new bookmarklet and go about your normal browsing. When you get to a site asking for your login credentials, simply tap on the 1Password bookmarklet we created earlier and 1Password will launch on your device with the page pulled up and your password at the ready.

This is going to save me a ton of time, personally. It's great to not only see URL schemes added to the app, but to also see shortcuts like this one help make my life a little easier.
