Send an instant voice message (without waiting for the beep)

For the times when you have more to say than a text message, but less than a phone call, a voice message is the answer.

This is one of those solutions you didn't know you needed...until now.

Although texting may be the preferred method of communication today, it has its flaws. Autocorrect fails and difficulty expressing sentiment (without too many emoticons) are all too common with SMS.

And phone calls? Call me a generation Y-er, but sometime I just want to get my message across without a lengthy conversation, complete with "hellos" and "goodbyes."

That's why HeyTell, as suggested by a good friend, is my new obsession. The free app, which works cross-platform for Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone 7, allows you to send voice messages to friends when you need to get your point across quickly.

Send instant voice messages with Android or iOS

Getting started with HeyTell
HeyTell is quite simple to use. Follow these steps to get started on any mobile platform:

  1. Download HeyTell for Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone 7.
  2. Once installed, follow the onscreen instructions to adjust your display name and privacy settings.
  3. Tap the person button (above-right of "Hold and speak") to add contacts. If a friend doesn't already have HeyTell, or he has strict privacy settings, you'll be asked to send that person a text message invitation. Unregistered users will be prompted to download the app.
  4. Once you're connected with a friend, that person will appear in your contacts list. To send a voice message, select a name, hold the big orange button while you say your message, and release when you're done. Your friend will receive the message instantly (as long as he has reception) and will be able to respond the same way.
