Prevent iCloud Documents & Data from using your data plan

iCloud can be rough on a tiered data plan, but with the simple toggle of a switch, users can limit iCloud to syncing only when they are connected to a Wi-Fi network.

If you aren't fortunate enough to still be on an unlimited data plan, you may be paranoid about how much data you are using on a daily basis. With iCloud and the eventual release of more iCloud-enabled apps, the amount of data being used by your device is inevitably going to go up.

Keeping tabs on your data usage, as well as being proactive to limit your data usage is critical to ensure you aren't surprised with a huge overage bill. One way of doing this is by limiting iCloud to sync your data via Wi-Fi only. Here's how to do just that in three easy steps.

  1. Open Settings on your iOS device. Scroll down to iCloud and tap on it.

  3. Find Documents & Data and tap on it.

  5. Toggle the Use Cellular switch to off if you would prefer your iCloud-enabled apps not use your data plan to sync across bits and pieces of information.

Syncing Documents & Data with iCloud allows apps to store information in your iCloud account. The amount of the data can range from iWork documents down to a few characters of text in a key (settings, small strings of text).

Keep in mind the next time you open an iCloud-enabled app and your data isn't syncing, you need to be hooked up to a Wi-Fi network for it to sync. If down the road you change your mind, you can turn cellular sync back on by repeating the steps above.
