Are you afraid that your computer will crash one day and take all your valuable data with it? A proactive way to help avoid data loss is to move your documents, photos, music, etc., from the Windows system drive to another physical drive.
Windows uses special folders like, My Documents, for quick access to files, but are stored on the system drive (C:), alongside the Windows operating system. Here's how to change the default location of the special folders:
Step 1: Browse to C:\Users\username, where "username" is the name of your Windows user account.
Step 2: Right-click on the special folder, My Documents and select "Properties."
Step 3: In the "Location" tab, click on the "Move" button, then browse to the new location you've chosen.
Step 4: Repeat the procedure for each special folder you want to move.
That's it. Now your files are free from the system drive. If Windows or your C drive go kaput one day, your data will be safe on another drive. Of course, this isn't a substitute for a good backup scheme. We recommend regular backups to ensure that you can also recover from hard-disk failures, viruses, and other catastrophes.
