If you or your employer use Google Apps as your e-mail provider, and you are experiencing issues setting up Google Sync on your mobile device, make sure that the account admin has Google Sync enabled. This short guide will walk you through enabling Google Sync (ActiveSync), which will allow members of the Google Apps account to access their e-mail, contacts, and even calendar as if they were on an Exchange server.

If you are the admin of the Google Apps account, you can access the Dashboard either by logging in to your account at mail.google.com/a/[domain_name] or google.com/a/[domain_name]. Make sure to replace [domain_name] with your domain name, for example: mail.google.com/a/iloveunicorns.com.

If you are logged in to your e-mail account and you are the admin for the Google Apps account, click on the link to "manage this domain," which is up in the top-right-hand corner.

You should now be looking at your Google Apps Dashboard. The blue bar that runs across the page has links to the various sections of the Dashboard. The only one we are going to be concerned with right now is the one titled Settings or Service Settings on the far right. Select it.

If you are presented with a drop-down, select Mobile from the list. If you are taken to a new page, on the far left you will see the Mobile option at the bottom of the list; select it.

On the next page you will see a list of devices that are compatible with Google Apps; below that will be an unchecked box followed by "Enable Google Sync."

Once you check that box, Google Sync will be enabled automatically. There isn't a save button that needs to be pressed; you can either go back to the main Dashboard page or simply log out.

Your users will now be able to enjoy an Exchange-like experience on their mobile devices.
