iPhone quick trick: Tag your group texts

If you are texting groups of people often and have a difficult time finding the conversations, use this trick to tag your texts, making them easy to access later.

If you are texting groups of people often and have a difficult time finding the conversations, use this trick to tag your texts, making them easy to access later.

If your texting habits are anything like those of some of the people I know (my own aren't too crazy), you undoubtedly find yourself needing to text specific groups of people quite a bit. It may be co-workers who meet up on Monday nights for Bingo, your brothers and sisters (but not your parents, because they just don't need to know), or your closest pals. In any case, it can be frustrating to search out those conversations in your message history.

Using the ability to search SMS and MMS messages in iOS 4 you can make finding (and continuing) dialogues with your groups a snap.

First, start a new SMS or MMS message. Be sure to include everyone who will need your updates in the group. Then decide on an easy-to-remember short name or abbreviation. This will be your search tag for finding this group in the future. Think of it like a pound-tag on Twitter, for example #GreatiPhoneTip.

If you don't have a message to send the group right now, switch your iPhone to Airplane Mode and hit send. The message will of course fail, but you will now be able to search your keyword. For my example, I used "pdx" to denote the group of friends I need to send group messages to in Portland.

Now, when you need to send a message in the future, tap the Messages App and pull down on the messages list to reveal the search bar. Type in your keyword and your conversation will appear.
