Google Doodle celebrates Vitamin C pioneer with oranges

Google continues its growing tradition of celebrating scientific and cultural pioneers who might not be household names, but whose work is part of our daily lives. While today's citrus-filled doodle on the search engine front page first appears to indicate that Google has sold out to Tropicana, it's actually a tribute to Albert Szent-Györgyi's 118th birthday.

What, you weren't already taking the day off to celebrate? In case you're not in the know, Albert, whose full name is Albert von Szent-Györgyi de Nagyrápol, is the person credited with discovering Vitamin C and the citric acid cycle. That work earned him a Nobel Prize in 1937. He was also one of the first to look into connections between free radicals and cancer, and according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, "his discoveries about the biochemical nature of muscular contraction revolutionized the field of muscle research."… Read more

Vitamin Water offers juice for your phone

This is probably one of the most innovative and useful ads we've seen in a long time. A Vitamin Water promotional display at select bus stops can power phones and other mobile devices.

Currently decorating selected bus stops in Boston, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, Glaceau's Vitamin Water Energy Bus Shelter by ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky integrates a three-port battery-powered USB hub in an image of the bottled water. This allows waiting commuters to charge their device for free, clearly with the hope that they will juice up their bodies with Vitamin Water later on in gratitude.

The charging station is part of the brand's "You're Up" campaign, which emphasizes that the drink is formulated to provide a quick boost on the go.

Got glaucoma? Put a little vitamin E in your lens

The eye condition glaucoma, which afflicts some 67 million people and is second only to cataracts as the world's leading cause of blindness, is often treated with eye drops that relieve the unusually high pressure inside the eye.

Contact lenses with vitamin E, however, just might deliver more medication to treat glaucoma almost 100 times longer than current lenses, says Anuj Chauhan, a chemical engineering professor at the University of Florida in Gainesville who helmed the research team investigating this new treatment:

"The problem is within about 2 to 5 minutes of putting drops in the eye, tears … Read more

Security software maker Vitamin D exits beta

Vitamin D, the start-up founded by three former Palm executives, said on Monday that it is ready with the final Version 1.0 of its software for Windows and Mac, which enables people to use a standard Webcam as a security system.

The company, which caught some interesting things on tape during beta testing, said that the single camera version of its software will continue to be free, as it was during beta testing. A version of Vitamin D Video that works with two cameras will cost $49, while a high-end edition that supports an unlimited number of cameras running … Read more

Caught on tape: Pastry thief and a bad dog walker

When three former Palm executives started public testing of their security monitoring software late last year, the goal was to prove to the world that the product--Vitamin D--was really better than other technologies at distinguishing humans from other moving objects.

But several months of testing also led to some rather interesting things being caught on tape.

Owners of a San Leandro, Calif., coffee shop, for example, were able to determine who was stealing pastries once a month, forcing a $300 pastry order to be scrapped each time.

"This is exactly what we wanted to do by getting out the … Read more

Eat enough vitamin C

I would much rather get my vitamin C from oranges and other fruits than have to take an extra pill every day. The fruits with plenty of vitamin C typically require special tools to peel and eat. Citrus fruits are tasty but dealing with the peel is time consuming. The Vitamin C Set includes what you need to deal with orange rind and more. The set includes two spoons, one with a green handle and one with an orange handle. The green spoon has teeth along its edge, allowing you to scoop grapefruit segments and peel kiwi fruit. The orange … Read more

Ex-Palm trio loads up on Vitamin D

The great thing about security cameras is the fact that they let you record things without needing to have a human being physically there.

The downside is that, in most cases, it takes a human being to figure out whether there is anything interesting there. Sure, there is motion-sensing technology, but such systems are often fooled by animals, cars, or even by a tree rustling in the wind.

Three former Palm executives think they have some software that could help shake things up. Their company, Vitamin D, is releasing a public beta on Monday of software that can detect and … Read more

Piecing together smart cameras at DemoFall 09

At Demo on Tuesday, Third Iris pitched Viaas, a video-monitoring system for business that's simple to install and use. Plug the cameras into just an Ethernet cable (if it's enabled for Power-over-Ethernet, that is), log into the Viaas Web site, and you can get your own business surveillance system up and running in a snap.

From a business perspective, Viaas follows the mobile phone model: the cameras, which sell for a low price ($199.95) considering their high-end sensors, are subsidized by the monthly fee you pay to access them, $29.95, or more if you want to … Read more
