Skype giving away free holiday Wi-Fi at select U.S. airports

Travelers stuck at the airport during the holidays will find at least one free gift, courtesy of Skype.

The IP-based calling service is offering free Wi-Fi at more than 50 airports across the U.S. from December 21 though December 27. People traveling through any of the select airports will be able to log on to a Skype Wi-Fi connection via their PC, Mac, or Apple iOS device to make a video or voice call.

Skype Wi-Fi comes to iOS devices

Skype's Wi-Fi access app is coming to Apple iOS devices.

The company said Wednesday that its Skype Wi-Fi app, formerly called Skype Access, will soon be a free app in the Apple Store, allowing iPhone, iPod Touch (running iOS 4.1 and above) and iPad users to connect to over 1 million Wi-Fi hotspots around the world via their existing Skype accounts.

Skype 2.8 for Mac to launch Tuesday

Skype 2.8 for Mac will ship on Tuesday, with new features including screen sharing and an integrated Wi-Fi hot spot connector.

Available only for Mac OS X at first, the new version will add screen-sharing capabilities to the app's voice, video, and chat communications features. Skype spokespeople told me that users will be able to run all four channels at once with acceptable performance.
