Samsung mobile head confirms 8-inch Galaxy Note

An 8-inch Samsung Galaxy Note no longer exists solely in the realm of unicorns and Apple TVs. A Korean news site is reporting that Samsung mobile honcho JK Shin has confirmed plans to release a midsize version of the tablet.

Samsung's game plan of late seems to be to cover all bases, with a wide array of smartphones and tablets that come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and price points. An 8-inch Galaxy Note to continue the trend could debut at February's Mobile World Congress.… Read more

Samsung: We don't intend to negotiate with Apple

It appears Samsung Electronics won't be following in HTC's footsteps.

HTC on Saturday settled its long-running legal dispute with Apple, raising expectations that Samsung may do the same. But the Korean conglomerate's mobile chief, J.K. Shin, has told the Yonhap News Agency that the company will bank on a legal resolution instead of an out-of-court settlement.

Shin said he doesn't intend to negotiate at all with Apple, illustrating just how far apart the two companies are. While Apple scored a significant victory in the U.S., there are a number of legal clashes going on … Read more

Samsung, Google execs to meet amid Apple patent wars

Samsung's Shin Jong-kyun will meet with Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt in Seoul tomorrow, and it's a safe bet the topic of Apple will come up.

The Samsung Mobile chief confirmed today that he will meet with Schmidt on Thursday in Seoul, according to the Korea Times. Shin was mum on details, so the agenda is unknown. The Samsung executive also said that meetings with major U.S. carriers are scheduled for next week.

But the meeting with Schmidt comes a little more than a month after Samsung lost a major patent case to Apple in the U.… Read more

Samsung's mobile chief JK Shin has a better day in Berlin

When JK Shin landed in Berlin this week from Seoul, he was no doubt hoping for some better press than what he received over the last several weeks as Apple and Samsung duked it out before a judge and jury in a Silicon Valley U.S. district court.

Shin, the head of the Samsung's mobile-phone business, was the author of a 2010 internal memo that was at the center of Apple's claim that Samsung infringed on its iPhone and iPad patents and designs. A jury on Friday agreed with Apple, awarding the company $1.05 billion, pending Judge … Read more

Former Apple designer: I won't testify at Samsung trial

Former Apple designer Shin Nishibori is playing hard to get at testifying in the patent showdown between Apple and Samsung.

Samsung had been counting on Nishibori to appear in court. While at Apple, he developed designs of a Sony-like iPhone, according to AllThingsD, reportedly at the behest of Apple's design guru, Jony Ive.

The maker of Android-based smartphones has been arguing that Nishibori's designs serve as evidence that Apple's iPhone was influenced by Sony. If proven to be true, those claims would help Samsung, which has been accused of copying the iPhone for its own Galaxy smartphones. … Read more

Galaxy Tab 10.1 to hit Best Buy, 4G model on the way

Samsung's new 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab tablet is slated to reach consumers in June, with Best Buy revealed as one of the retailers, but Samsung is also busy prepping a 4G edition due to hit the market later this year.

Best Buy's product page touting the Galaxy Tab says only that it's "coming soon," however, comments made recently by J.K. Shin, president of Samsung's mobile communications division, confirmed that the new 10.1-inch tablet and its smaller 8.9-inch cousin will reach consumers in June.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet is slated … Read more

Samsung touts new tablet, smartphones

Samsung will release its Galaxy Tab tablet no later than the third quarter of this year, revealed J.K. Shin, president of the company's mobile communications division, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Tuesday.

Based on the few specs and a photo leaked earlier this month, the Galaxy Tab will sport a high-resolution 7-inch display, making it more compact than Apple's iPad with its 9.7-inch screen. Blog site Samsung Hub (not affiliated with Samsung) said the 7-inch model will hit the market in August, and that two others may follow: an 8-inch version in … Read more

Radiohead, Beck, White Stripes live on DVD

I was never much of a fan of music videos or MTV. I couldn't understand why anyone would want to watch a band act out a silly story or lip-sync to a make-believe "performance." Why not just shoot the band playing for real in a studio?

The geniuses at IFC have done just that with Nigel Godrich's "From the Basement" series, which is now coming to DVD. There's an amazing roster of talent to see and hear.

High points include the White Stripes. Jack's wailing vocal acrobatics and scorching guitar riffs bouncing … Read more
