Google to retire Postini, migrate features to Google Apps

Google plans to shut down Postini, the e-mail security and archiving product it acquired in 2007, shifting users over to Google Apps next year.

The Web announced the transition today, saying that it has spent the last year building Postini's features into Google Apps for Business, a professional suite, and Google Apps Vault, an e-mail archiving and discovery service.

"With this transition to Google Apps, you can receive similar email security, protection, and archiving, but through the more robust Google Apps service," Google said in a company blog post. "Google Apps also works with mail servers … Read more

Google pitches Exchange backup with Postini

Google continued to remind enterprise IT managers today that it wants to provide alternatives to Microsoft's e-mail products.

With the launch of Google Message Continuity, an e-mail backup service, Google wants to get a toehold in companies that run Microsoft Exchange servers for e-mail by offering themselves up as a backup solution should something go wrong with those servers. The idea is that in the event of an Exchange outage, workers could sign into Google accounts and get their regular work e-mail as usual through Google's interface.

The real idea, of course, is to convince more and more … Read more

'Gone Google' campaign going global

Google claims more than 2 million businesses and 20 million people have switched to Google Apps, a movement the company is touting through its expanding "Gone Google" marketing program.

Google's official blog on Monday put in a plug for the ongoing flow of companies that have adopted its services, including not just Google Apps, but also the Postini spam filtering and Google's Enterprise Search Appliance.

In August, Google asked customers to tweet the benefits of using its online apps and services, and now the company has gathered together those tweets in its GoogleAtWork Twitter page.

Postini: Google's take on e-mail security

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--The computer security industry historically borrows military defense concepts to combat digital threats, literally creating war rooms where experts follow attacks in progress on huge screens with phones ringing off the hook.

Not so at Google's Postini e-mail security service provider unit. Instead, computerized systems monitor 3 billion messages per day that flow in and out of customer systems and pass through Postini's thousands of machines in data centers around the U.S. and in Europe before hitting the Internet. The Postini system is highly automated, distributed, and scalable, characteristic of all of Google's … Read more

Postini: Spam up again following McColo takedown

It has taken spammers only four months to get their botnets back up after hosting company McColo Corp. was shut down, according to statistics due to be released on Tuesday from Google's Postini e-mail security provider.

Spam volumes dropped as much as 70 percent or 80 percent overnight when San Jose, Calif.-based McColo was shut down on November 11, 2008. McColo was hosting command and control servers that were being used to send instructions--like send spam or Trojans--to bot software planted on PCs, mostly in the U.S.

By the second half of March, seven-day average spam volume … Read more

On Wednesday, the Danish security company BullGuard announced it will offer its spam filter product as a free download. The BullGuard Spamfilter (download) integrates with Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail clients. It runs on Windows 2000, XP, and Vista.

The BullGuard product relies upon fellow users to identify spam; once e-mail is marked as spam, all other Spamfilter users will no longer receive that e-mail in their in-boxes. It will be available within the spam folder instead.
