Portable camping stove charges gadgets

Charging gadgets out in the wilderness is a challenge, but the BioLite CampStove could change that for the power-hungry. This 2-pound portable device features a USB port that can power or charge devices while you burn biomass.

So how does it work? Well, the thermal energy of the fire delivers power to fans inside the stove through a thermoelectric module. These fans blow air on the fire to improve combustion, which in turn creates excess energy. A USB port delivers the extra energy generated by the fire for charging devices such as smartphones, LED lights, or GPS units.… Read more

iCloud logo unveiled as Apple sets up for WWDC

SAN FRANCISCO--As it does every year, Apple started setting up for its Worldwide Developers Conference days in advance of its kickoff, offering a glimpse at what will greet attendees next week.

Signage put up by the company today inside the lobby of San Francisco's Moscone Center doesn't unveil anything we didn't already know from a press release issued earlier this week, but offers the first look at the logos for iCloud and iOS 5.

iCloud was first mentioned and named by the company on Tuesday, along with word that Apple CEO Steve Jobs would be doing the … Read more

Return of the foldable Stowaway keyboard

The Think Outside Stowaway was a product from about 10 years back. This foldable keyboard was designed for PDAs, in the old days when Palm ruled the electronic organizer world. It was an amazing bit of equipment--a full-size ThinkPad-esque keyboard that folded to a quarter of its footprint when not in use. I remember watching with envy whenever someone whipped it out in school to take notes.

Imagine my surprise when I saw an article on Gizmag about an identical product made by Japanese peripheral maker Thanko. There's no mention of the brand "Stowaway" in the article, … Read more

Outside.in geocodes your blog

Cool alert: If you feed your blog to Outside.in's new GeoToolkit, it will monitor it for location-specific content, and give you a map you can embed in your site. It also gives you analytics, so you can tell later what locations you've been covering.

Previous coverage: Outside.in Radar: Super-mega-hyper-local content.

The map widget gets more interesting when it brings in the geo-tagged data from other sources as well. If you're writing about a happening at a particular location, you could, theoretically, ask your map widget to show related content from other sites or from advertisers. … Read more

Best of Outside Lands: Beck, Radiohead, Wilco...

If you didn't make it to the Outside Lands music festival in San Francisco last weekend (or you did and want to relive it), check out our free playlist and photo gallery below featuring some of the top acts. While everyone had their own unique experience, the climatic triple threat of Bon Iver, Broken Social Scene and Wilco on Sunday was my personal highlight. A common theme throughout the day was crowd participation (there were several occasions when the audience was invited to clap, sing, and scream along). From the reviews that I've read, and from general word-of-mouth buzz, the festival appeared to be a great success. Hopefully the artists and promoters feel the same way and will book a second annual Outside Lands next year!

Free playlist featuring Manu Chao, Radiohead, The Cool Kids, Nicole Atkins, Beck, The Walkmen and more:

Outside.in Radar: Super-mega-hyper-local content

At the launch of Yahoo's Fire Eagle on Tuesday, local news aggregator Outside.in launched its latest product, the "hyper-local" service called Radar. Here's the pitch: you tell it where you are (or have Fire Eagle do so on your behalf), and then it will tell you what's going on within 1,000 feet of you.

Or you could just look out the window.

But seriously, this is a good pitch. While I don't buy the literal 1,000-foot story, since the main drag of my neighborhood is 1,400 feet from my front … Read more

Outside.in launches local-news discussion forums

Outside.in, a New York-based site that aggregates town-specific news, blog posts, and business listings into a sort of Local News 2.0, formally launched a discussion forum feature on Wednesday.

Thie move puts Outside.in more squarely in the league of Yelp and Craigslist, which supplement their respective business reviews and classifieds listings with lively local message boards.

Obviously, discussion boards don't mean anything if there isn't a solid base of users willing to contribute to them regularly. But there certainly are more than a few people who like to rant about their local school board, sidewalks … Read more
