Nyko wants the PlayPad to be the new standard for tablet game controllers

LOS ANGELES--E3 might have left out new hardware this year, but third-party accessory manufacturer Nyko was busy putting together a few items that have a lot of potential.

But perhaps the most promising item is the PlayPad and PlayPad Pro, a result of Nyko's partnership with Nvidia and working with Google that aims to standardize controller inputs on Android's Ice Cream Sandwich tablet platform and beyond.

It's a smart initiative because it not only gives developers the comfort of knowing their Android tablet games will have a proper amount of control, but it also gives players the … Read more

What will CES 2012 have in store for gaming?

CES isn't exactly gaming's biggest stage, but it seems each year its presence increases. At CES 2012, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo will all be at the big show. While it doesn't appear that Microsoft will have any new hardware on display, both Sony and Nintendo have lots to show off.

Sony is sure to be pushing the Vita, and I'm hoping to get a better idea of how the device will interact with its big cousin, the PlayStation 3. Sony has also told CNET there will be some new Vita games on the show floor for … Read more

Nyko Zoom delayed, Kinect floor space optimizer pushed to September

At E3 2011 Nyko successfully convinced us that all of our Kinect floor spaces issues would be fixed thanks to the company's Zoom optical Kinect attachment originally scheduled to debut this month.

Unfortunately Kinect owners living in close quarters will have to wait a bit longer for the 40 percent increase in surface area requirements. MTV Multiplayer is reporting that the Nyko Zoom has been delayed about a month to September 13, though the $30 price tag remains unchanged.

MTV Multiplayer says Nyko blames an "overwhelming demand from consumers and retailers" as the cause for a delay. … Read more

E3 2011: Nyko says it's solved Kinect floor space issue

LOS ANGELES--One of our biggest gripes with Microsoft's controller-less motion system was the fact that it required quite of bit of real estate to function properly. A minimum of 6 feet from the camera seemed to be the sweet spot, but even at that distance we've experienced some nags with gameplay.

Small apartment living rooms like the ones we're used to in New York may now be able to accommodate Kinect with Nyko's Zoom for Kinect accessory. Thanks to a series of what we'd describe as an arrangement of wide-angle lenses, the $30 snap-on accessory sits over the standard Kinect array and drops the space prerequisite by 40 percent. That's a bold claim, so we had to try it out for ourselves.… Read more

CES: Nyko unveils 2011 gaming accessory lineup

Nyko has had a strong showing at CES over the past few years by introducing innovative third-party accessories for game consoles. Last year the company beat Nintendo to the punch by releasing the Wand+, the first Wii controller to feature MotionPlus built in.

We've gotten a look at the 2011 lineup, and this year Nyko has shifted its focus to target support for PlayStation Move. While we've already seen the two- and four-port Charge Stations for Move, also available in March will be a rifle-shaped Move accessory that should make first-person-shooter games a lot more realistic. Also coming … Read more

Wii Remote Plus official, MotionPlus onboard

While most of last night's Nintendo Conference 2010 news was aimed at the 3DS and its release date, and Game Boy Virtual Console, we also learned about a new controller for the Wii.

Just after we finished reviewing the Nyko Wand+--the first Wii remote to pack in MotionPlus hardware onboard--Nintendo has announced plans to release its own all-in-one MotionPlus controller. We had speculated about such a device last week when a leaked photo of box art surfaced, but now Nintendo has officially confirmed the details. We imagine that the Wii Remote Plus will eventually replace the current Wii … Read more

Nyko ships Wand+ with Wii MotionPlus built in

When Nintendo released its MotionPlus attachment last summer, we really liked the additional degree of control it offered, but didn't love the fact that it required a bulky add-on to the standard Wii remote.

Sure, we figured Nintendo would have addressed such a thing with a Wii remote redesign, but instead Nyko has beaten them to the punch.

Today, Nyko begins shipping the Wand+ Wii remote. We first got our hands on the Wand+ at CES 2010 and really liked the new soft-feel rubberized surface that coats the entire remote. It appears identical to the original Wand controller, save … Read more

Nyko to release PS3 controller laid out like a 360's

Nyko had another solid showing at last month's E3 2010 expo in Los Angeles, but we're really intrigued by its debut of a wireless controller with an analog stick configuration similar to that found on the Xbox 360 controller.

The Raven wireless PS3 controller will come in two styles. The first will emulate the PS3's conventional side-by-side thumbstick design, while the other swaps the D-pad with the left stick--just like Microsoft's Xbox 360 controller layout.

While the never-ending debate over which system has the superior input device will go on forever, this will be the best chance PS3 owners will have to get an idea of what it's like using the Xbox's configuration on their own console. We'll be sure to update this post with a price tag when we get one.

A deeper look at the Nyko fall lineup includes a few PlayStation Move charging solutions and an inexpensive wired PS3 "core" controller. We've got pictures of the rest of these products after the jump.… Read more

CES 2010: Gaming wrap-up

LAS VEGAS--A lot of the gaming news we anticipated last month came to fruition at this year's CES in Las Vegas. While we didn't get a definitive release date for Project Natal, Microsoft did announce the motion sensing technology would be available this holiday season. How much it will cost is still a mystery and there was no sign of Natal at Microsoft's CES booth.

However, we did get some information about Xbox Live Game Room, a new online application that will allow gamers to virtually experience all the goodness of a classic arcade. Free to try … Read more

Nyko rolls out PS3 Slim accessories

Sure, we really like the PS3 Slim's brand new-sleek design, but unfortunately some pre-existing PS3 accessories don't play nicely with the console's updated form factor. To fix this, Nyko has revamped most of the company's PS3 accessory lineup for the Slim and improved on the Media Hub in the process.

The Media Hub Slim doubles the system's amount of USB ports to four and adds an SD card reader slot as well. The unit fits snugly under the front left lip of the console and plugs into both of the Slim's existing USB ports. … Read more
