Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two due this fall

Mickey Mouse is gearing up for another adventure. In an interview with the Associated Press, Junction Point co-founder Warren Spector revealed details about Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii.

Due out this fall, the sequel to the action-adventure game Epic Mickey will boast drop-in, drop-out cooperative play with Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Oswald will be AI-controlled when another human player isn't available.

Another new design choice for Epic Mickey 2 is full-voice acting. Frank Welker (Abu from "Aladdin") is slated to play Oswald, with other cast members also featuring human voices.

Disney throws open its doors for Halloween

BURBANK, Calif.--Every Hollywood studio is security-conscious in this era of online spoilers, but the folks at Disney play it tighter to the vest than most. To keep its news fresh (and to preserve the fairytale illusions for kids), Disney doesn't let "non-cast members" behind the scenes very often.

So it was a special (trick or) treat last week when Disney Interactive Media Group invited members of the press, staffers, and any kids in earshot to come on the studio back lot for a Halloween party.

The group used the event to hype its current slate of games across multiple platforms (Xbox 360, PS3, iOS, and PC), including Lego Pirates of the Caribbean, Cars 2: The Video Game, and Disney Universe. … Read more

Report: Disney lays off half its game staff

Walt Disney has laid off hundreds of people in its game development division as it transitions from console content to more casual gaming, according to CNBC.

Citing an unnamed source, CNBC reported that Disney may have eliminated up to 350 of the 700 jobs in the company's game development office.

However, a source close to Disney told CNET today that the layoffs are not nearly as steep as CNBC is reporting.

The news is all the more surprising when one considers that Disney launched the popular Epic Mickey on the Nintendo Wii less than two months ago. The release … Read more

Epic Mickey seeks to morph mouse into game hero

Starting today, consumers can get their hands on Epic Mickey, a title exclusive to the Wii.

The game, which retails for $49.99, puts players in the role of the iconic mouse as he uses paint (and paint thinner) to change the world around him. As gamers play the title, their decisions affect how the game unfolds. Disney said in a statement that there are several "possibilities and storylines" for players to follow, but they will face "consequences for their chosen actions."

Ultimately, gamers must turn Mickey Mouse into a hero.

But the concept of transforming … Read more

High-tech exhibits shine at Walt Disney museum

SAN FRANCISCO--It's hard to imagine anything in a museum featuring hundreds of original Disney concept sketches and art pieces, including dozens of Mickey Mouse, being as impressive as the art itself.

But try visiting the Walt Disney Family Museum in the Presidio here and not coming away with the strong impression that the way the facility was designed, with its wide variety of beautiful digital displays, imaginative use of video screens, innovative touch-screens, audio clips of Walt himself nearly everywhere you go, and much more, is nearly as compelling an experience as the opportunity to see first-hand the origins … Read more

Nintendo's E3 games: No Wii Fit in sight

What would you have said if someone told you pre-E3 that Microsoft would do its best to mimic Nintendo, whereas Nintendo would act like Microsoft? It certainly seemed like the companies flip-flopped at their respective E3 press conferences. Though the 360 spent a great deal of focus on motion control and the Kinect, Nintendo didn't breathe a word about health, motion, or the Wii Fit at its E3 briefing on Tuesday.

Instead, the company's games were the real focus, especially retro franchises: those folks hoping for years for a taste of old Nintendo games certainly had a field day. StarFox, F-Zero, and Pikmin remain undisclosed (Update: Though not discussed at the press briefing, StarFox 64 3D was announced for the 3DS), but Nintendo did unveil new Kirby, Donkey Kong, and Kid Icarus titles, along with detailed gameplay from the next Wii Zelda.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword: Demonstrated for nearly half an hour, the Nintendo flagship sequel will feature Wii MotionPlus support for more-accurate weapon and item actions. The rest of the story remains a mystery, but the game has a more cel-shaded look than Twilight Princess. It arrives in 2011.

Wii Sports Mix: In a very smart move, Nintendo is creating a Mario compilation sports game with what appear to be soccer, hockey, dodgeball, basketball, and volleyball. This could be a real surprise hit, and it's a nicer idea than infinite "Mario X" sports games.

Wii Party: Nintendo's "bridge" game, the next in the "Wii" series, features Miis in a game that looks a lot like an updated Mario Party. Board games, minigames, and group casual play seem like the focus. … Read more

The 404 599: Where we've gone to plaid (podcast)

We have a new rule on The 404 Podcast: Every third show title must include a reference to one of the greatest parodies in cinematic history: "Spaceballs." The classic comedy with Rick Moranis and John Candy may not be Mel Brooks' best, but it's definitely our favorite "Star Wars" spoof...unless you count "The Phantom Menace."

The big news in the world of tech is AT&T's major iPad security breach that exposed 114,000 e-mails and ICC IDs to a group called Goatse Security, but we're leaving that story … Read more
