Audiophiliac readers' show off their hi-fis and home theaters

I never had any doubt that readers of this blog have the coolest systems, but the magnitude of the flood of homemade speakers, desktop systems, headphones, and all sorts of groovy turntables totally knocked me out. There's some sweet gear here, so click to the slideshow and check out the systems. Thanks to all who sent JPEGs -- I heard from well over 100 readers, so I can't show everyone's gear.

Nothing to sneeze at: Paper napkin iPhone cases

One can find an Apple iPhone case made from just about anything. From bamboo to leather to rubber to plastic, the world's manufacturing materials are very well-represented in options for your iDevice covers.

A case material that may not jump out as an obvious choice is being utilized by a company out of Thailand to sell its iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S cases on Etsy. That material is a paper napkin.

It may be what you've scribbled your offer to purchase a multibillion-dollar company on and slid across a lunch counter table, but it's also being turned … Read more

It's a boom box. It's a vintage suitcase. No, it's a BoomCase

Sacramento, Calif.-based "Mr. Simo" makes one-of-a-kind speaker facades out of old suitcases. They look amazing, so I got in touch with the company's owner, Dominic Odbert, to learn more about his designs.

Each BoomCase is a unique creation, so if you see one on Odbert's Web site that catches your fancy, don't think about it too long, because once it's sold, there's never going to be another one exactly like it.

Odbert's has a background in fine art, and he's been building audio gear since he was a kid. Odbert … Read more

How Sherlock Holmes would charge his iPhone

Though perhaps not quite as ornate as that steampunk computer desk from last month, the handmade iPhone and iPad docking stations and iMac and MacBook case covers at Old Time Computers are more accessible, at least for the moment.

A side project of Etsy user and old-time hot rod restorer woodguy32, the Old Time Computer items are all limited edition. According to the Web site, "they all take a long time to build, so they will not be in production. This is just a hobby and something I enjoy and put my heart into."

Prices range from $42 … Read more

Etsy find: iPhone stands made of forks and spoons

Cute. Clever. Whimsical. No, no, I'm not talking about me, but how sweet of you to think that! I'm referring to ForkedUpArt's iPhone stands made of forks and spoons. I think the photos speak for themselves; these things are just adorable.

(Um, did I just use "sweet" and "adorable" in the same paragraph? I meant to say "killer" and "bitchin'." There, manhood restored.)

As you can see, there are two versions, the aptly named Fork Head and Spoon Head. Both use a combination of forks and spoons, and both … Read more

Bryston's hand-made CD player

Bryston doesn't believe automation has a place in high-end audio manufacturing. They still hand-build CD players, and their full line of preamplifier and power amplifiers at their Peterborough, Ontario factory. The BCD-1 CD player was conceived with the audiophile in mind, someone who appreciates exceptional build quality and outstanding performance.

Rather than rely on inexpensive, off-the-shelf chipsets, the Bryston player's audio circuits use "discrete" devices--individual transistors, resistors, and capacitors. Each part is hand selected and installed, every wire is cut and bent by hand, every connection is hand soldered. This strategy, while expensive to implement allows … Read more
