Hyundai Elantra Coupe drops a pair of doors, GT gains one

The Elantra Touring version of Hyundai's previous-generation compact was (and remains) one of our favorite small, cheap wagons.

So, we're not surprised to see a five-door variant of the current-generation Hyundai Elantra debut at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show. What you may not have seen coming was the coupe version of Hyundai's fluidically sculptured sedan but that, too, was unwrapped at the show.

The Elantra Coupe doesn't differ dramatically from the Elantra Sedan we tested last year. In fact, about the only measurable differences are the removal of a pair of doors and the addition of … Read more

CNET Car Tech: 2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS

Hyundai has been rewriting the value rules in the mid and higher ends of the car market, but doing that on the low end is a trickier proposition. Can it really show Corolla and Civic how its done with the new 2011 Elantra? Brian Cooley takes you for a drive to check the tech.

Hyundai builds a better Civic: 2011 Elantra GLS

For years, the Honda Civic has stood as the gold standard for small, fun-to-drive cars. Recently, however, C-segment competition has started to heat up, and Honda is facing some serious competition from the likes of Hyundai. Yes, Hyundai; don't laugh. We were recently given an opportunity to spend time behind the wheel of Hyundai's all-new compact sedan and we're now thoroughly convinced that Honda should definitely be afraid of the 2011 Elantra GLS.

Starting in the engine room, the Elantra is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that, at 148 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque, … Read more

Hyundai i40 shows what Sonata wagon would be

The 2011 International Motor Show in Geneva is still a bit away, but Hyundai has given us our first look at the soon-to-be premiered i40 estate. "Estate," for our North American readers, is how our friends across the pond say "wagon"; and we like wagons.

The i40 was developed with the European market in mind, but shares a platform with the North American Sonata. The i40 will feature, among its power train options, a 1.7-liter diesel engine that emits just 113 g/km of CO2, which is pretty good--best-in-class good, actually.

The i40 was developed … Read more

Hyundai teases Veloster sport coupe before Detroit

There have been rumblings and spy shots floating around the Internet for some time, but today Hyundai makes its upcoming compact sport coupe official with the launching of a teaser campaign for the 2011 Hyundai Veloster.

The teaser site doesn't show much more than a countdown to the vehicle's unveiling at the 2011 Detroit auto show on January 10. However, a teaser video found on the automaker's YouTube channel (embedded below) lets us know that the coupe will feature a direct-injected engine--likely a four-cylinder--mated to a dual-clutch automatic gearbox that delivers an estimated 40 mpg. Those numbers … Read more

2011 Hyundai Elantra spotted before LA reveal

Earlier today, Hyundai released a staged "spy photo" via TwitPic of its upcoming 2011 Elantra as a teaser for the compact sedan's reveal at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. We'd show you the photo, but we've got something even better: an undisguised 2011 Elantra spotted on the streets of San Francisco, not two blocks from CNET's offices.

As expected, the Elantra carries over many of the styling cues that debuted with Hyundai's larger Sonata, including windswept headlamps, a prominent flowing crease that runs the length of the vehicle's flank, and wide … Read more

Hyundai Elantra now available with navigation

Midway through the current 2010 model year, the Hyundai Elantra GLS and SE trim levels are getting an upgrade in the form of an optional in-dash navigation unit.

This LG-sourced system features 8GB of flash memory for storing map data and POIs. This looks to be a modified version of the flash-based Hyundai navigation system we tested in the Genesis Coupe--which was also a mid-cycle upgrade. If that system is any indicator, you can forget about using any of that space for storing music. However, with iPod and USB connectivity, we don't think this will be a deal … Read more

2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring

Hyundai has been building some pretty good buzz recently with the all-new Genesis Sedan on showroom floors and the Genesis Coupe en route. But what about the models that fall underneath the Genesis' halo?

We take a spin in one of Hyundai's bread-and-butter models, the 2009 Elantra Touring and find that the Genesis' cabin tech hasn't yet trickled this far down the lineup. iPod integration and standard satellite radio give you something to listen to, but the single option stereo doesn't impress.

Fortunately, it's not all frowns as the Elantra Touring proves to be a peppy … Read more
