Dish Network just took the lead in turning Internet TV into reality.
Long have the biggest names in technology -- Apple, Google, Sony -- aspired to elevate tech's courtship of television to full-blown marriage: a multichannel television service, giving you the most popular networks of your cable provider but delivering them over the Internet.
And long has it been a story of unrequited love. No company has yet to make major, public, legitimate strides toward that goal, relegating them instead to grand proclamations of intent or sidelong glances at their hearts' desire.
That changed late Monday, as Charlie Ergen'… Read more
Dish's protections around its contentious Auto-Hop feature on the Hopper remote DVR just started to crack.
In order to renew an agreement that will ensure Dish continues to carry Disney networks like ABC and ESPN and gain access to video on apps for the channels, the satellite television distributor agreed to disable the automatic ad-skipping feature on its Hopper network DVR for three days after a program is broadcast.
The deal was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
However, a release detailing the deal later Monday showed their deal goes much further than that. Dish also secured the … Read more
A federal appeals court Friday denied broadcaster 21st Century Fox's appeal to make Dish Network's Hopper ad-skipping service temporarily unavailable to consumers.
At the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth District, a panel of the court denied Fox's request for an "en banc" rehearing, which means the entire bench of the Ninth Circuit court would rehear the case rather than the smaller panel. It also rejected another panel rehearing.
According to the opinion, the judges involved voted against the rehearing because the lower Los Angeles court's decision appropriately determined Fox failed to … Read more
Dish Network is reportedly pulling its bid for LightSquared, the wireless service provider mired in bankruptcy protection.
The satellite TV provider, which had apparently sought LightSquared's wireless spectrum, offered $2.2 billion for the company last year. However, LightSquared's special committee has decided to negotiate a deal with private-equity firm Centerbridge Partners, which last month offered $3.3 billion for the wireless company.
Dish is expected to make the termination of its offer official as early as Thursday, according to the Wall Street Journal. CNET has contacted Dish for comment on the matter and will update this report … Read more
For the past couple of years, Dish's kangaroo-themed CES announcements have centered on its Hopper DVR, which acts as a command center for whole-home Dish systems, enabling you to access content on Joey set-top extender boxes in other rooms and stream it to mobile devices using the Hopper's integrated Sling feature.
For 2014, the company has shifted gears a bit and the headline act here at CES is not the Hopper, but the Joey, which will soon come in four versions (aka a "troop") instead of just one. Along with the standard Joey, Dish is introducing … Read more

Sprint and Dish are teaming up on a project to deliver wireless broadband to areas that may otherwise be out of the loop.
Announced on Tuesday, the joint venture would lead to a rollout of fixed wireless broadband to Corpus Christi, Texas, around the middle of 2014. The service would at first be available only in a limited number of sections around the city. But the plan is to expand to other markets in the future, Sprint said.
To enable the high-speed access in a customer's home, Dish will install an outdoor router or indoor equipment to send the … Read more
Though I've never hosted a Thanksgiving dinner myself, I've been through enough holidays with my family and friends to know there are a lot of moving parts with the preparation and cooking that all need to come together at once. With several steps involved in roasting the turkey, the need to make numerous sides (such as mashed potatoes, stuffing, and gravy), along with other Thanksgiving favorites, it's no wonder the cook can get a little stressed.
While my personal cooking experience will be of no help to you during the holidays, there are a number of great … Read more
Dish Network's Hopper prides itself on making it easy to go right to the content customers want instead of ads. The company's latest software update makes it easier to go right to the Hopper when customers turn it on.
The satellite TV provider updated its DVR with an HDMI-CEC function, which means the television can automatically adjust to the Hopper input as soon as a user turns on the box. For example, if you last watched a Blu-Ray on your TV, HDMI-CEC and this update will switch you back to your Hopper when you fire it up without … Read more
