Ready for Windows 8? We're just starting on Win 7, says Dell

Maybe everyone's focused on the wrong Microsoft operating system.

Dell said during its earnings conference call on Thursday that "commercial" customers, meaning corporate customers, are just now transitioning to Windows 7.

"I think you continue to see Win 7 on the commercial side of the business. It's driving a refresh cycle," said Brian T. Gladden, chief financial officer for Dell, during the conference call.

Yeah, you read that write. That's corporate customers switching from, for example, XP or Vista to Windows 7. And that is driving PC and hardware upgrades at Dell.

PC slump hits Dell earnings

As the PC market continues to spiral downwards, the world's third-largest PC maker is tumbling down with it.

Dell on Thursday reported its first-quarter earnings five days earlier than expected, due to a report by The Wall Street Journal detailing leaked numbers on Monday.

The PC make reported $372 million on revenue of $14.07 billion, or 21 cents a share.

According to average analyst estimates compiled by Thomson Reuters, Dell was expecting to report net income of $607.1 million on revenue of $13.5 billion, or 35 cents per share.

New low for Windows RT tablet: Dell cuts price to $299

Windows RT tablets just hit a new low: $299.99.

That's what Dell is selling its XPS 10 RT tablet for online, reduced from $449.

The XPS 10 includes -- as CNET Deals points out -- Windows RT with Microsoft Office Home & Student 2013 RT; a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor; a 10.1-inch 1,366x768 display; a 28Wh battery rated at up to 10 hours; front and rear cameras; microSD slot; and 32GB of storage.

The discount may have something to do with Windows RT tablets not flying off the shelves -- and becoming as scarce … Read more

Dell asks for more information on Icahn bid

A Dell committee tasked with evaluating which buyout bid would be best for the company's shareholders is willing to give activist investor Carl Icahn more of its time.

In a letter sent to Icahn on Monday, Dell's Special Committee requested additional information regarding a memo he sent to the company on May 9 offering either $12 per share in cash or $12 in additional shares for each share currently held by stockholders. In the letter to Icahn, the committee said that it was "not clear" if his offer was "an actual acquisition proposal" or … Read more

Carl Icahn targets Dell, HP before the PC goes 'downhill'

We know Carl Icahn wants to buy Dell. But he also has his eye on the other half of the U.S. PC industry. But don't worry, this will all happen before the PC dies.

The other half would be Hewlett-Packard. Icahn is pondering the merger of Dell with HP, according to comments he made to Bloomberg TV on Friday.

Michael Dell needs to be fired first, though.

"We think it's very important that you have a new CEO [at Dell]...We need more than a bit of a cultural change at Dell. Michael Dell, I just … Read more

CNET has contacted Dell for comment and will update this report when we learn more.

Dell brings 4G LTE wireless connectivity to Windows 8 tablet

Dell is now offering 4G LTE on its XPS 10 -- a feature conspicuously absent on most Windows 8 tablets.

"Today, we're introducing an AT&T 4G LTE mobile broadband version for US customers on Dell.com, providing professionals with the same fast, reliable, high-speed internet connection as on their smartphones for connectivity anytime, anywhere," Dell said in a statement Thursday.

The XPS 10 is a bit of an oddball tablet among the top-tier PC makers.

It's one of the few tablets to use the RT version of Windows 8. And it's even a … Read more

MacBook Pro declared 'best-performing' Windows laptop

An Apple 13-inch MacBook Pro is the "best-performing" Windows laptop? Yes, says a PC services company that has done "frustration analytics" on some of the best-selling PCs.

The MacBook Pro won out over established PC makers like Dell, Acer, and Lenovo, according to Soluto, which was quick to explain its finding.

A main factor in this machine's metrics is the fact that every Windows installation on it is clean. With PC manufacturers loading so much crapware on new laptops, this is a bit of an unfair competition. But, on the other hand, PC makers should … Read more
