Apple TV to add more prime-time shows with CW Network app

Apple TV is branching into app partnerships with television networks by striking a deal with the CW Network.

CW, a joint venture between Warner Bros. and CBS, confirmed to CNET that the partnership is indeed in the works. (CBS is the parent company of CNET.)

"We can confirm that we will have an app launching on Apple TV soon," a CW spokesperson told CNET on Thursday. "No launch date at this time. The app will have full episodes of our prime-time shows, and be ad-supported, without requiring authentication from a cable provider."

Fanhattan for iOS adds HBO and Cinemax, still trying to be iPad's perfect video app

Devices like the iPad have become spectacular as repositories for streaming TV apps and video services, but they're not so great at discovery of said streaming shows, which tend to be scattered around like Easter eggs across different apps. The latest version of Fanhattan takes a small step forward in the great Mission To Help iPad Users Find Their Videos, but it's not the perfect app yet. … Read more

Hulu tries to one-up Netflix with CW deal

Hulu has signed a licensing deal with CW Network that will give the online-video service something that its archrival Netflix doesn't have.

Two weeks ago, Netflix announced its own deal with the network operated by Time Warner and CBS, parent company of CNET. But in that deal, Netflix customers will get only previous seasons of current CW shows, such as "Gossip Girl" and "The Vampire Diaries."

Hulu said in a press release today that under the five-year agreement, it will "offer next-day access to the most recent five current prime-time episodes [at Hulu Plus, … Read more

Netflix licenses reruns from CW Network

Netflix has licensed content from CBS and Time Warner's jointly operated CW Network, the companies announced today.

The agreement is for four years and gives Netflix the streaming rights to more than 700 hours of reruns of CW's youth-oriented shows, such as "The Secret Circle," "The Vampire Diaries," and "Gossip Girl."

CNET News is published by CBS Interactive, a unit of CBS.

The deals are certainly not exclusive.

"These rights extend for four years after each series, current or future, ends its broadcast run on the network," the CW said … Read more

Morse decoder

OK, Computeers! What's the oldest form of electronic communication? If you said the telegraph, you're right. Most people know what Morse code is, too: Named for its inventor, it's the dots and dashes that the telegraph man so dramatically taps out on a metal key in old Western movies. Known by the shorthand CW, Morse code is a direct ancestor of computer code. The Internet uses the same basic technology, and probably the same wires, too, in some places, so it's appropriate that we should take a look at software for sending and receiving Morse code … Read more

Sony's new Windows 7 laptops: CW and X

One is an affordable HD laptop with an optional Blu-ray drive, the other is a carbon-fiber lightweight feather of a notebook with a price that's far from budget. Together, they comprise Sony's Vaio newcomers that are ready to launch along with Windows 7.

Let's start with the sexiest. The Vaio X has been shown off in photo galleries here before, but the details are now confirmed. At half an inch thin, it isn't quite as slim as a Dell Adamo XPS, but its 1.6-pound carbon fiber body makes it the "lightest notebook ever," … Read more

AOL's Socialthing brings streaming and sharing to Warner Bros. TV

Social media is coming to Warner Bros. Television Group's online properties, thanks to a smallish AOL property called Socialthing.

A feed of members' activity across Warner Bros. entertainment sites--TheWB.com, KidsWB.com, DC Hero Zone, MomLogic, Essence, and TheCW.com--will be displayed on their Socialthing profiles. So, if you watch a "Gossip Girl" video on TheCW.com or play a game on DC Hero Zone, it'll show up in your feed, and you can keep tabs on what your friends are doing as well (and share bits of content with them). There will also be fictional … Read more
