Apple parts ways with hacker famous for iPhone jailbreaking

Apple's experiment with employing a hacker famous for jailbreaking the iPhone has ended.

Nicholas Allegra, also known as Comex, was hired at Apple after gaining fame with the JailBreakMe, a Web site that simplified the process of removing Apple-installed protections from the phone -- a practice Apple opposes. When Apple hired him as an intern in August 2011, Allegra was a high-profile member of the jailbreaking community, regularly publicizing security vulnerabilities in Apple's iOS software.

However, Apple ended the 20-year-old Brown University student's employment last week, Allegra revealed today.

Untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreaking workaround

Though this isn't the official untethered jailbreaking solution for iOS 4.2.1, the iPhone Dev Team has produced a short demo video showing off a workaround method for getting it done now.

Hack-master comex is still working on the permanent untethered jailbreak, but if you've been following the jailbreaking community and happen to have saved SHSH blobs from your iOS device, your device could be jailbroken today.

A more efficient iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak should be just around the corner, so stay tuned. For more information about jailbreaking your iOS device, follow the iPhone Dev Team Blog. … Read more

Frash isn't currently available for wide release. The app, according to its developers, just isn't stable enough to justify releasing it just yet. Realizing that, Comex has decided to make the app's files available on GitHub to allow any developer to tweak and improve the software for … Read more

Comex: Where geeks get to bargain like fishwives

There's a certain pain to covering the massive Comex IT bazaar that takes place every August in Singapore. However, getting one's toes stubbed by some clod in the packed halls of Suntec City is a small price to pay when coming across bizarre offerings like an updated version of the Muse2 MP5 player.

Why MP5? Literally, it's an MP3/4 multimedia player that offers 5-in-1, according to the very helpful sales assistant (who probably should learn to count, since the brochure listed 8): a 3-megapixel digital camera, video camera, FM radio, video player, music player, voice recording, … Read more
