While a holiday price war is breaking out among laptops, Apple is staying comfortably above the fray with its iPad Air, according to Deutsche Bank.
About 60 percent of the 80 best-selling laptops at retailers that Deutsche Bank recently monitored cost less than $400, while 30 percent are below $300.
Deutsche Bank did a "series of online checks" that included Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart over cyber Monday.
"We believe this reflects the need for [laptop] vendors to close the pricing gap with tablets which continue to exhibit strong market momentum," analyst Chris Whitmore said … Read more
Dell is officially announcing its first Chromebook on December 11. The system, to be called the Dell Chromebook 11 (HP also has a system called the Chromebook 11), won't be aimed at casual budget PC shoppers, but instead at schools.
The company says, "The Chromebook 11 was built specifically to meet the needs of schools and districts around the country looking to deploy affordable and comprehensive one-to-one computing initiatives."
No details about the system's components or features are available yet, but Dell says it plans to introduce other Chromebooks in the coming months, some aimed at … Read more
You might by now have gotten used to the idea that very few tech products are worth buying.
The idea will have come to you from Microsoft's relentless pursuit of the tech world's lack of excellence.
Redmond has gained particular joy from attacking Google, which it sees as a company that's less lovable and more Strangelovable.
In recent weeks, its Scroogled campaign began to attack the Chromebook, not the most aggressively marketed product Google has ever produced.
Since February, when Google launched its Chromebook Pixel, there's been just one option for those seeking a Chromebook with a touch screen. It came with a high-resolution screen -- and a high price tag: $1,299.
On Tuesday, however, Acer announced a touch screen Chromebook option that's less than a quarter of the price. The latest in its new C720P Chromebook series comes with a touch screen and will go on sale early next month at Amazon, Best Buy, and the Acer Store for just $300.
It features a Haswell-based Intel Celeron processor and an 11.6-inch HD … Read more
Microsoft won't stop until Google's knees buckle and its egos bow.
The Redmond, Wash., company doesn't care if you don't like its attacks on its alleged rival, but it would prefer it if you'd at least wear a T-shirt that pretends you do.
There's no Google target that doesn't deserve spittle. The latest is the Chromebook.
The Chromebook is such a heap of insidious, useless technology that not even a pawnbroker will take it off your hands.
At least, this is the message of the new Scroogled ad from Redmond.

For a while, it seemed like Chromebooks had a sweet spot of $250, so Acer rose to the challenge and priced this year's new Chromebook C720 at that level -- $50 higher than last year's C710.
On Friday, it released an updated version of the C720 -- back at $199.99.
The Acer C720-2848 Chromebook is 0.75-inch thick, weighs 2.75 pounds, sports an 11.6-inch, 1,366x768-pixel display, and matches the previous Acer C720 model. For now, it retails at Best Buy and Amazon.com. It will be in the Acer store in December, according to … Read more
HP and Google have asked retailers to stop selling the HP Chromebook 11 because of an overheating charger, the companies said Wednesday.
Both Google and HP said they are "pausing sales" of the laptop "after receiving a small number of user reports that some chargers included with the device have been damaged due to overheating during use."
The companies are working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to figure out next steps, but, in the meantime, HP Chromebook 11 owners should stop using the charger that came with the laptop.
"In the interim, they may … Read more
Chromebooks are becoming increasingly popular. The affordable computers currently account for four of the top five best-selling laptops on Amazon, ranking higher than Apple's MacBooks and various Windows 8 laptops. With price tags under $300 and a strong advertising budget provided by Google, the Chromebook's success shouldn't come as a complete surprise.
The question remains, however, who's buying these computers? I rarely see a Chromebook out in public, and chances are you've never seen one. In fact, the only time I run into a Chromebook is at an industry event, usually being tested by another … Read more
