Fake Turkish site certs create threat of bogus Google sites

Google and Microsoft revealed today that a certificate authority based in Turkey "mistakenly" issued security certificates last month, and that a recipient of one of the e-documents in turn created a bogus certificate that could let it impersonate various Google sites.

According to a blog post by Google engineer Adam Langley, Chrome detected and blocked an unauthorized security certificate for the domain "*.google.com" on December 24. After blocking the certificate, Langley said, Google investigated and determined the certificate came from an intermediate certificate authority that linked back to the Turkish certificate authority TurkTrust.

Apple returning to old stomping grounds for U.S.-made iMacs?

Evidence suggests that Apple could be assembling some of the new iMacs in Fremont, Calif.

Two U.S. models that 9to5Mac traced originated in the San Jose area.

"One tipster's origination pickup point was briefly visible as Fremont CA so it would appear that iMac assembly is happening in that general vicinity," the Mac enthusiast site said.

Another possible location for an assembly operation would be Elk Grove, Calif., where Apple still has operations. But, so far, there's no hard evidence that units are being assembled there.

Hands-on with the snappy Gizmon iCA iPhone case

YOKOHAMA, Japan--We've previously reported on the Gizmon iCA, an iPhone case that makes your smartphone look like a vintage rangefinder. The company was at the CP+ Camera and Photo Imaging Show, and we learned it has plans to launch a whole system of special-effect lenses and accessories for its flagship case soon.

In addition to the fisheye and macro lenses already available, future attachments will include tele, wide, tunnel effector, mirage, and circular polarizing special-effects filters. Sure, some of these effects could be easily reproduced using apps, but doing it the old-fashioned way and getting it right the first time without post-processing has a certain appeal. Other accessories include a car stand, mounted flash unit, mini tripod, remote shutter release, and silencer. … Read more

Dell taps former CA chief to head new software group

Dell has hired John Swainson, former CEO of CA, as president of its new software group.

Reporting directly to Dell CEO Michael Dell, Swainson will lead the new group with a mission to sell products and services to large enterprises as the company continues to expand beyond the PC business.

Dubbed CA's Mr. Fix-It in a CNET story from 2005, Swainson has been credited with turning around and expanding his former company, a talent Dell undoubtedly hopes he can bring to his new position.

The new software group is aimed at helping Dell in its ongoing goal to sell … Read more

Turn your iPhone into a vintage rangefinder

Fans of vintage cameras can now dress their iPhones in Gizmon's iCA case, which makes the handset look like a Leica rangefinder camera. The iCA case also comes with some useful functions, such as the ability to capture images via the case's shutter button and frame the scene with its optical viewfinder.

Made of polycarbonate, the $65 case also has a lens mount for users to swap four lenses, a tripod socket for long exposures, and strap lugs for you to loop your handset on a neck strap like a regular camera.

An entire system of accessories is currently in the works, with the company looking into developing attachments such as special-effects filters, an external flash, and a car accessory stand, to name a few.

How to get your Ethernet-only gadgets on your home network

Internet and network connectivity is becoming a key feature in more and more home entertainment products--everything from TVs to Blu-ray players to audio components. But many of these products come with a big caveat: they don't include built-in support for wireless networking, or Wi-Fi.

This list of wired-only products includes such mainstream devices as TiVo, Slingbox, most entry-level Blu-ray players, many Internet-ready TVs, and the pre-2010 versions of the Xbox 360. Even pricier products such as AV receivers (including the otherwise excellent Denon AVR-1912) don't necessarily come with wireless connectivity on board. For many of these, manufacturers offer … Read more

CA focuses on virtualization-to-cloud continuum

Over the last several years CA Technologies has made a number of cloud-related acquisitions--3Tera, Oblicore, Nimsoft--companies focused on the management and associated necessities of cloud infrastructure, if not direct components or providers of clouds themselves.

At this week's Structure conference in San Francisco, I spoke with Jay Fry, vice president of marketing for cloud computing, about what the company is doing to address the burgeoning cloud marketplace. (The company changed its name last year from CA, and before that it was Computer Associates.)

According to Fry, this year is about figuring out what customers really want--not just from … Read more

2011 Samsung monitor preview: Central Station, now boarding

This is part two of our three-part early-2011 Samsung monitor preview that began on Monday.

During Samsung's CES press conference, the company debuted a product difficult for me to wrap my head around from the remote vantage of a stage demo. It wasn't until I actually saw the device running at Samsung's booth that I understood what the company was going for.

Samsung refers to Central Station as an IT hub. It's a standalone monitor with a number of connection inputs on its base. First, you connect your desktop peripherals (keyboard, mouse, etc.) via USB to … Read more
