See a pro photog's beautiful Instagram view of baseball

San Francisco Bay Area photographer Brad Mangin -- a veteran shooter of baseball games and other sporting events for Sports Illustrated -- uses a high-powered dSLR for most of his work, but turned to an iPhone and Instagram to capture a more personal view of the 2012 Major League Baseball season. His upcoming book, "Instant Baseball: The Baseball Instagrams of Brad Mangin," features many sights only a pro photographer would have the chance to observe. The book comes out in late April. … Read more

YouSendIt CEO: Beware the Silicon Valley bubble

PARIS -- Silicon Valley is famed for its role in nurturing startups, but companies there often suffer problems from not looking beyond the insular region to the rest of the world.

So warned Brad Garlinghouse, chief executive of YouSendIt -- one of those companies in Silicon Valley "echo chamber" -- speaking here at the LeWeb conference.

"The hype factor that has impacted Silicon Valley is an unhealthy thing," Garlinghouse said. "Companies focus more on the hype than building a great experience."

Garlinghouse is a high-profile voice in the echo chamber. Perhaps his greatest claim … Read more

Peek under the skin of Predator, Alien, and Mogwai

Chances are you had to dissect a frog in high school biology class. What if it had been a Mogwai instead? Artist Bradwick J. McGinty III has created a bizarre mashup of science fiction creatures and vintage anatomical drawings imagining what fictional beasts look like under their skin.

The Mogwai doesn't look as cute and cuddly as usual in this form. The illustration hints at its sinister transformation into a Gremlin through the care and feeding instructions at the bottom of the drawing. Better keep an eye on those feeding times!… Read more

One man's journey to create Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber

It seems doubtful we will live "in a galaxy far, far away" in this lifetime, but we can at least build incredible homages to the "Star Wars" saga in the meantime.

One could say that Brad Lewis -- a BioWare senior visual-effects artist who works on the Star Wars: The Old Republic role-playing game -- wields a certain affinity for "Star Wars." After all, his personal blog Slothfurnace features systematic build guides for half a dozen previously created lightsabers that completely outshine those frail plastic toys that occupy countless toy shelves. … Read more

Twitter runs its first TV ad in Nascar race

You always know when a tech company is becoming modern and sophisticated in its marketing.

It starts doing TV ads.

TV has worked delightfully to put a human face on Google. And now along comes Twitter looking to employ some of that old mass marketing in order to sell, well, let's see.

I am grateful to the gear-headed obsessives at Business Insider, who were clearly glued to their TVs watching the 2012 Pocono 400 Nascar race today. (Perhaps Euro 2012 is too high-falutin' for some people.)

Anyway, during this fine event, there appeared a 15-second miniature on behalf of … Read more

Brad Garlinghouse updates Yahoo 'Peanut Butter Manifesto'

NEW YORK--In 2006, Brad Garlinghouse became known for his "Peanut Butter Manifesto," a highly critical analysis of Yahoo's management and business strategy. He wrote:

"We want to do everything and be everything--to everyone. We've known this for years, talk about it incessantly, but do nothing to fundamentally address it. We are scared to be left out. We are reactive instead of charting an unwavering course. We are separated into silos that far too frequently don't talk to each other. And when we do talk, it isn't to collaborate on a clearly focused strategy, … Read more

Ex-AOL honcho Brad Garlinghouse to run YouSendIt

There are a lot of things you can be famous for in Silicon Valley, but Brad Garlinghouse will probably always be known for having sent the legendary "Peanut Butter Manifesto," a 2006 document that excoriated his team at Yahoo for their lackadaisical attitudes, and which will always be mentioned as "Jerry McGuire-esque."

More recently, Garlinghouse has been president of commerce and applications at AOL. And today, according to Fortune, YouSendIt, a player in the cloud storage business, announced that Garlinghouse is coming aboard as CEO.

"I didn't want to be the salmon swimming upstream, … Read more

Nascar driver tweets during race, adds 130,000 followers

What's cooler than a powerful racing machine hurtling around a track at 200 mph? A powerful racing machine iPhone and twittering driver on board.

There are plenty of tech tie-ins with Nascar's famous Daytona 500, which got off to a late Monday start after a rain delay. Danica Patrick's GoDaddy sponsorship may be the most noticeable, but driver Brad Keselowski made the geekiest impact with his Twitter escapades.

A freak accident that resulted in the explosion of a truck full of jet fuel kept drivers off the track under red-flag conditions for quite a while in the … Read more

Digital pop-up book gets poetic with QR codes

Rather than fret about the rise of e-readers and tablets and the seemingly imminent demise of the book as we know it, book artist and poet Amaranth Borsuk decided to reimagine the digital-versus-paper struggle as a kind of dance, and make it the basis for an artist's book of her own.

Along with her husband, Web developer Brad Bouse, Borsuk created "Between Page and Screen." It's a digital pop-up book that contains nothing but elegantly rendered QR codes on its printed pages. Readers go to the book's Web site, hold a page in front of their Webcam, and watch onscreen as a poem pops out of the quick-response code (and moves along as the book is moved).… Read more
