Update, 4:51 p.m. PT: Paul Gelb, Mobile Practice lead at Razorfish, sent several tweets today saying his company was not working with Facebook on mobile ad buying: "I would like to clarify a statement I made in an interview yesterday regarding Facebook. Publicis Groupe to buy Microsoft's Razorfish

French advertising group Publicis Groupe has agreed to acquire Internet ad agency Razorfish from Microsoft for $530 million in cash and stock.

Razorfish will continue to operate under its own brand name and continue to serve as Microsoft's "preferred provider" for Internet advertising, the companies announced Sunday in a joint statement. The deal includes a strategic alliance agreement in which Publicis Groupe will purchase display and search advertising from Microsoft over a five-year period.

Report: Microsoft shopping Razorfish to ad agencies

Microsoft is shopping its digital ad agency Razorfish around to five major ad agency players, says Monday's Wall Street Journal.

The company hopes to strike a deal for Razorfish that would entice the right agency to use Microsoft's advertising technologies and buy ad space on Bing and other properties, according to the Journal. The move is seen as part of Microsoft's growing battle with Google and other Web sites for precious online ad dollars.

Report: Microsoft to cut Razorfish loose

Microsoft is putting Internet ad agency Razorfish up for sale, according to a Financial Times report Sunday.

Microsoft, which acquired Razorfish in 2007 as part of its $6 billion takeover of Aquantive, has reportedly hired Morgan Stanley to find a potential buyer. The report identified French marketing company Publicis Groupe as a potential buyer.

Razorfish is a digital advertising agency now owned by Microsoft. It does media buying and other things along those lines that ad agencies do. However, it also designs digital user experiences and implements the technologies used to deliver them.

Jeff Dachis, one of the original Internet cowboys while running Web consultancy Razorfish, is again offering advice to corporate America.

Venture capital firm Austin Ventures is putting up $50 million to back Dachis' new venture, a consultancy that plans to help companies use social networks as well as sell them the software tools they need.
