Buy a Samsung 830 SSD, get Ghost Recon Future Soldier for free

If CNET's sterling review of the Samsung 830 series solid-state drive isn't convincing enough, here's another incentive.

Samsung announced today that its 830 series SSDs will include a downloadable version of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier PC game with a purchase of the 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB model. … Read more

Top small internal drives to usher in the new year in a big way

New year, new resolutions.

If one of your resolutions is to get a better computer so you can be happier with your life, I'd suggest you double down on exercising, or better yet add eating healthy to the list, because chances are your computer is working just fine.

What you need might just be a new internal storage device and your computer will be as good as new, or maybe even better. This is especially true if you have a system (be it a laptop or desktop, running Macs or Windows) that's 3 or 4 years old and uses an SATA hard drive as its main internal storage device. Most existing computers fit this category, by the way.… Read more

Samsung 830 SSD review: Fast and not so furious

Even when you get a good deal, a solid-state drive still costs significantly more than a regular hard drive of the same capacity, and a drive's price is, of course, one of the biggest factors that determines its value. For this reason, it's really hard to rate an SSD without knowing how much it costs. However, that's exactly what I had to do with the Samsung 830 series.

While the final product has been available to the press, Samsung is very tight-lipped about the pricing of its new SATA 6Gbps-based SSD and will not reveal it until … Read more

Can the Ultrabook top the MacBook Air? (Q&A)

The only way the new Ultrabook laptop category can top the MacBook Air is to get cheap fast. But that won't necessarily be easy, according to an IDC analyst.

Ultrabooks--for the uninitiated--are very light, very thin Windows laptops that compete with the MacBook Air. The core hardware includes Intel second-generation "Sandy Bridge" processors and solid-state drives. One of the best examples is the 13-inch Toshiba Portege Z830.

The Z830 has a magnesium alloy case, weighs about 2.5 pounds, and is 0.63 inches thick. Toshiba claims it will sell for less than $1,000.

By comparison, … Read more

Ultrabooks: The first wave

Amid all the laptop news this week, much of it coming out of the IFA show, there were a few announcements that especially stood out: two major PC makers unveiled their entries in the new (and untested) Ultrabook category. Even better, we got a change to get our hands on working demo units of both models, the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s and the Toshiba Portege Z830. Those two new models join previously announced Ultrabooks such as the Asus UX21.

The Toshiba Portege Z830 has a strong lineage as a successor of sorts to the very popular Portege R835, which is one … Read more

Toshiba announces Portege Z830 ultrabook

It's a big week for laptops, thanks to the IFA going on in Europe right now, and Toshiba's addition is the Portege Z830 series. Toshiba says the system is part of Intel's new ultrabook platform, and at first glance it shares some common traits with the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s we saw earlier in the week.

The Portege Z830 has a magnesium alloy case and weighs around 2.5 pounds and is 0.6 inches thick -- Toshiba says that's about 20-percent lighter and 40-percent thinner than the Portege R835, which is one of our favorite current … Read more

Samsung to release SATA 3 solid-state drive

Samsung will ship the next generation of its 2.5-inch SSD, the 830 series, in October, the company announced today. With up to 512GB of storage and support for the latest SATA 3 interface, the new drive promises to double the speed of its predecessor, the Samsung 470.

It seems this is Samsung's answer to a slew of SATA 3-based SSDs recently released by other vendors, such as the OCZ Vertex 3, the Crucial M4, or the Plextor PX-256M2S.… Read more

Quick Take: Sharp LC-LE835U series

Although CNET has not reviewed the Sharp LC-LE835U series, we did review a similar TV model, the LC-LE830U series.

According to the manufacturer the major difference between the two is that the LC-LE835U series is 3D-compatible and works with active 3D glasses (not included). See our 3D TV FAQ for more. The 835 has a 240Hz refresh rate, while the 830 has a 120Hz refresh rate. We don't expect this difference to have a major impact on picture quality. Check out the article 240Hz: What you need to know for details.

The 835 also has a glossy screen finish … Read more

Quick Take: Sharp LC-60LE831U

Although CNET did not review the Sharp LC-60LE831U, which is exclusive to Best Buy, we did review a similar, non-exclusive TV, the LC-60LE830U.

According to the manufacturer the only differences between the two are that Best Buy's LC-60LE831U lacks Quad Pixel Plus and IP Control features, and that the dynamic contrast ratio specification on the 831U is 5,000,000:1, compared with the 830U's 6,000,000:1.

We don't expect the difference in contrast ratio specification to have a major impact on picture quality, but we can't say for sure since we haven't … Read more
