Musicians still waiting on a YouTube payday

How important is music to Google's YouTube.com? Out of the 12 all-time most viewed YouTube clips, nine are professionally made music videos. At least one rock video has been watched more than 75 million times on YouTube.

But do the performers in the videos share in the advertising revenue generated by their work?

Some top music managers have told CNET News.com that their clients haven't seen any money from the licensing deals the four largest music labels have signed with YouTube over the past 18 months. According to a statement from Google-owned YouTube, the Web site … Read more

Sync your Google and Outlook calendars

Update 5:25 p.m. PT with other sync tools.

Online calendars are great but the problem is you tend to have one at work and a separate personal one. Now you can see events in both calendars at once, at least if you are using Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook.

Google released Google Calendar Sync on Wednesday, which allows you to sync up those two calendars.

The tool gives you control over which direction you want the synchronization to go as well as how often you want it to happen.

The software was easy to install, and I was … Read more

Wiretapping focus shifts to e-mail communications

The FISA fight is all about the e-mails, according to public comments made on Tuesday by a Department of Justice official.

For months, the debate has centered around immunity for telecom companies including AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. The primary focus has been on the warrantless wiretapping of the phone calls made by millions of Americans. In comments made at a public meeting on Tuesday, Assistant Attorney General for National Security Kenneth Wainstein made clear that the FISA fight is not about foreign-to-foreign calls, but actually about Internet data. The Washington Post reports:

At the breakfast yesterday, Wainstein highlighted … Read more

If Google wants a peek at its future, think of Microsoft

No doubt it was a platinum opportunity, one that Sheryl Sandberg could not turn down. But the departure of a highly regarded Googler to become Facebook's chief operating officer is more than just another Silicon Valley tale of lighting out for greener pastures.

Sandberg may be the headliner, but about one third of the company's first 500 employees have already left Google. Meanwhile you've got roughly 2,000 people who are pre-IPO veterans now waiting out the clock before their shares vest. I don't care how delish you find the free food in the corporate cafeteria. … Read more

Google Calendar now syncs with Outlook (RIP MS Exchange?)

I wrote a few months back about how Google's sync app was the quiet death of MS Exchange and today's announcement that you can do 2-way sync between GCal and Outlook just reinforces the point.

Outlook is the application that people can't get away from. The server behind it is largely meaningless as long as you can get the data. Even Microsoft finally is recognizing this with it's recent moves to put applications into the cloud.

Google Calendar Sync allows you to sync events between Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook Calendar. You'll be able to … Read more

EU could approve Google-DoubleClick merger next week

European regulators are planning to grant approval for Google's proposed $3.1 billion takeover of DoubleClick, possibly on March 11, according to a Bloomberg report.

And that would be approval without conditions, three sources familiar with the matter told the news service.

Google was given the go-ahead by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission in December, but has been waiting for European regulators to act.

Who wants some wireless spectrum?

As News.com's Maggie Reardon has told us, the FCC's ongoing 700MHz auction is proceeding along, albeit a bit slower than the FCC would like.

Much has been made about Google's entry into the bidding process (as Google Airwaves), but the tech giant is hardly the only company onboard. As a review, the other big bidders include AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless, Cox Communications, Cablevision Systems, U.S. Cellular, Leap Wireless, MetroPCS, Alltel, and Qualcomm. Also on the list is Vulcan Ventures, which is controlled by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. It's also interesting to see … Read more

Security threat discovered in Google's Android software

Researchers have found some holes in Google's Android SDK that could make the software vulnerable to hack attacks. But because commercial Android devices are still months away from hitting store shelves, there's no need to panic.

Core Security published an alert on its Web site on Tuesday stating that it had found eight vulnerabilities related to some open-source image processing libraries in Google's Android SDK, which the group claims are outdated. Attackers exploiting these vulnerabilities could take complete control of Android handsets, the alert said.

It's hardly surprising that some kind of vulnerability would be discovered. … Read more

Google's photo and bookmarking missteps

For all the company's overall success, some of its individual entrants sometimes seem not just lagging and wanting, but sometimes just plain... off.

I'm not so much talking here about sites like Orkut and Google Video that were more-or-less representative of and competitive with social media and video sharing sites (respectively) at the time they came on the scene. They simply didn't rise to the top of the pile for complicated and somewhat elusive reasons that would make for another long discussion.

However, other examples from Google just seem oddly out of tune.
