Nokia hopes its comeback story comes into focus with a little help from its 41-megapixel camera-packing Lumia 1020.
The former Finnish mobile devices giant was at it again on Thursday with the debut of its latest smartphone, which rocks the souped-up zoom-lens camera that impressed critics a year ago at Mobile World Congress. For some, this is the real PureView camera that should have been bolted on to last year's Lumia 920 flagship phone.
Even as the Lumia 1020 comes packed to the gills with features and advanced hardware, it's unclear whether this will be the smartphone to … Read more
The Nokia 808 PureView was simultaneously ahead of the curve and behind the times.
Its camera is still one of the best to ever be in a smartphone (if not the best), but the most common lament I read was that it was running on a near-dead Symbian OS. Second to that was how thick and heavy it was, which was out of step with just about every new smartphone at the time. That all changes with the Nokia Lumia 1020.
Limiting the number of potential customers for your latest flagship smartphone may not seem like a smart decision, but for Nokia, it's a "business strategy opportunity."
That's according to Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, who was justifying his decision to sell the Lumia 1020 as an exclusive product to AT&T. Elop sat down with CNET to talk about exclusivity deals, a more consistent campaign for the Lumia 1020, and making the right bets.
While it's not a shocker that AT&T has an exclusive agreement with Nokia on the Lumia 1020 (AT&… Read more
Nokia's new Lumia 1020 may be a Windows 8 phone, but Microsoft's OS division had to do some shuffling before the phone's enormous 41-megapixel camera could work.
First, Microsoft had to tweak Windows Phone 8 architecture to let the Lumia 1020's camera software processes two images, Windows Phone SVP Joe Belfiore said in an interview Microsoft posted online: one that captures a terrific amount of visual detail, and the condensed 5-megapixel version that's actually small enough to upload and e-mail.
In addition, Microsoft also had to code Windows Phone 8's photo viewer to improve … Read more
At the "Zoom Reinvented" event Thursday, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop announced that Flipboard, Path, Vine, and Hipstamatic are coming to the Lumia 1020, the first Windows Phone 8 device to get these apps. Yelp and Foursquare are also updating their apps to utilize the Lumia's impressive 41-megapixel camera to help users take and share better photos.
All of the apps are taking advantage of a new software development kit (SDK) from Nokia that gives developers access to the 1020's camera and the new Procamera app for capturing images.

AT&T subscribers may soon see Nokia's Lumia 1020 smartphone added to the carrier's lineup.
Equipped with a 41-megapixel PureView camera, the Lumia 1020 was spotted in an AT&T inventory list, according to an anonymous person who tipped off blog site Windows Phone Central. The tipster added that employees at AT&T have been seen testing the new phone.
