New HTC One hasn't debuted yet and already has a clone

HTC's anticipated flagship phone, reportedly dubbed the HTC One, won't be officially revealed until tomorrow, but it's already been cloned.

GizChina reports that the GooPhone One is based on the HTC One (also known by the code name M7) and was being shown off in renderings a few days before the HTC media event.

GooPhone is well known in China for producing remarkably similar knock-offs of popular smartphones and made headlines last year when it threatened to sue Apple over the iPhone 5 design patents in China.

The speed with which GooPhone manages to clone hardware seems … Read more

Qualcomm Quick Charge powers your device faster

Have you noticed that your new smartphone charges up quicker than your old one? You might want to thank Qualcomm and the Quick Charge 1.0 technology, which Qualcomm today announced is in more than 70 Snapdragon-based smartphones and tablets.

The rapid-charging technology can charge your phone up to 40 percent faster than previous generations, Qualcomm claims.

Where other models might take up to 4 hours to charge, a Quick Charge could accomplish the job in under 3 hours. As of today, there are more than 70 devices with support for Quick Charge 1.0, with more on the way.… Read more

HTC teases next flagship smartphone

HTC is gearing up for its next big launch.

The Taiwanese company has put a countdown clock on its Web site in an effort to tease next week's event. While the company hasn't publicly talked about what it will be launching, it is widely expected to unveil its next One flagship smartphone, which has also been known in some circles as the M7.

There are no details on HTC's site beyond the occasional lens flare in the background. Last week, a blog post from the company teased a "new sound and camera experience" for smartphones … Read more

Verizon details HTC Droid DNA bug fixes

Verizon will issue an update for the HTC Droid DNA in the near term that tackles some of the more frustrating user problems encountered by customers so far.

In a blog post, Big Red promises to update the HTC Droid DNA. Sorry, but this isn't the Android 4.2.2 update currently rolling out to the Nexus line; this is far less ambitious.

Once installed, the handset will benefit from better connectivity and added functionality. There is very little new in the software, but most of the features outlined are listed with "improvements."

While the phrasing is opaque, … Read more

HTC M7 may debut as HTC One

The highly anticipated HTC M7 is rumored to shed its code name for the more formal, "HTC One" branding next week, according to various reports.

Details surfaced this past weekend suggesting that HTC will stick with a familiar "HTC One" naming convention for the flagship device, with the twist that the moniker stops there.

However, the "One" name, if accurate, may do little to help differentiate it from other models in HTC's One series of phones, first introduced a year ago at Mobile World Congress.

If true, would the average consumer know that … Read more

Get an HTC Droid DNA smartphone for $49.99

If there's one smartphone that looks like it could challenge the Samsung Galaxy S3's supremacy, it's the HTC Droid DNA.

CNET's Brian Bennett called it "the best phone I've seen from HTC in a long while, especially on Verizon," and a "better buy" than both the S3 and Motorola Droid Razr HD.

But the $199.99 Verizon charges for it (with a two-year contract, natch)? Ouch. Thankfully, there's a deal to be had: for a limited time, Wirefly has the HTC Droid DNA for $49.99 shipped. That's for … Read more

Judge dismisses one of nine Nokia patent gripes against HTC

An administrative law judge for the U.S. International Trade Commission has dismissed one of Nokia's nine patent infringement claims against HTC, patents blog Foss Patents reported today.

HTC argued that the patent, which deals with routing data to an app, is a standards-essential patent. ITC Administrative Law Judge Thomas B. Pender agreed, dismissing the one complaint.

Standards-essential patents are ones that companies must offer to other companies on a fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory (FRAND) basis. The idea is that fair licensing of intellectual property is needed for devices from different manufactures to work together properly. Most of the … Read more

Tweak these settings to boost the battery life on your Windows phone

It doesn't take much searching on Google to find out that the battery life on a couple of the top-of-the-line Windows Phones -- the Nokia Lumia 920 and the HTC Windows Phone 8X -- are less than spectacular. Forums are rampant with angry user complaints about how quickly their phones are draining, turning their phones into useless bricks by each day's end.

But WP8 isn't alone -- mediocre battery life is an issue that plagues many phones. Remember when users freaked out about the iPhone 4S' battery life? (We had a fix for that, too.)

Decreasing brightness … Read more
