Simple tray calendar

QuickMonth Calendar is just the sort of freeware we love to see; it's compact, simple, and focused on its task. It does one thing: it pops up a calendar display near the system tray when you hover the cursor over the system time and date display. Calendars may be the most easily overdone feature in the software universe, integrating everything from note keepers to obscure historical facts to musical alerts when, 99 percent of the time, all you want to do is look at the calendar. Even the decent Windows tray calendar requires mouse clicks to open and close, … Read more

Apple adds calendars back to iPhoto

For those of you befuddled as to why Apple didn't support calendars in the latest version of iPhoto, wonder no more.

Apple just today sent us a note saying that it has pushed a software update that adds calendars to iPhoto '11. There's no explanation as to why they were missing in the first place, but it's a safe bet that it just wasn't ready when Apple introduced the latest version of the photo software along with iLife '11 and two new versions of the MacBook Air on October 20.

In addition to the calendar option, … Read more

QuickCal Mobile is an app that lets you quickly create new events for your calendar using plain language typed into a text field.

Mac users may know QuickCal from the free Dashboard widget of the same name, and the interface shares some similarities: you create events in the same way, by typing into an always-on text field. QuickCal will automatically recognize most parameters--for example, "Go to gym tomorrow 11-noon," "Yard work next Saturday at Dad's house," or "Team meeting next Friday for two hours starting at 3." As you type, the app will … Read more

New MobileMe Calendar available to all members

Apple officially launched its new MobileMe Calendar today, bringing the features out of beta and making them available to all members of the paid service.

The new MobileMe Calendar debuted as a beta in July, adding a number of new features to make the service more powerful and easier to use. The new calendar includes everything from redesigned views for day, week, and month, to a new list view showing your events.

Among the new features in the calendar is the ability to create a shared calendar and allow those you share it with to also edit events. E-mail notifications … Read more

Google Calendar issues enter fourth day

Google Calendar entered its fourth day of disruptions today with no word from Google on the cause of the problems.

Google's Apps Status Dashboard currently shows Google Calendar with the annoying yellow wrench, which isn't quite as bad as the dreaded red "x" but little comfort to those affected by the issues. Early Thursday morning Google said a Google Calendar issue "affecting less than 0.1 (percent) of the Google Calendar user base" was ongoing.

Just before 10 a.m. PDT, Google updated the dashboard to say that a resolution was pending for an … Read more

Google's iOS search app gets push notifications

It's not quite the solution iPhone users might have been expecting, but Google has brought yet another way to get push e-mail on the iPhone. Kind of.

Users with the company's Google Mobile search app installed will now find an option to receive push notifications for new e-mails or calendar events within the app's settings menu, along with a very neat option to enable them only for certain parts of the day. This is a particularly useful feature if you want to keep your phone from buzzing or beeping during the times when you're usually asleep. … Read more

CallitADay is an easy, inviting app that helps you create an electronic diary, with text, images, and even audio and video recording.

CallitADay's streamlined interface suits its straightforward purpose: the main, three-part window has a calendar (to start an entry, you select the date you want), a sidebar of previous entries (which you can organize by topic and browse as thumbnails, in a grid or Cover Flow-style), and a large editing pane, with controls for zooming, changing fonts and color, and browsing back through previous entries. This main window also has buttons for quickly creating audio and video recordings (… Read more

Quick reminders

Pester is a freeware alarm clock utility that provides a simple way to set timed reminders, along with a few cool extras.

Of course, you can use iCal and other scheduling software to alert you to upcoming events, but sometimes these apps are overkill--like, for example, when you're just putting something in the oven, or you're trying to remember to catch a bus. Pester occupies a middle ground between iCal and more bare-bones timers (such as egg-timer widgets), letting you quickly set an event, name it, choose a countdown or a specific time for the alert, and then (… Read more
