AT&T revamps global data plans

AT&T announced good news to customers who travel abroad with new international data plans that more than doubles the data allowance of the current plans. It's still not exactly cheap, but it's at least more affordable than before.

The cheapest $24.99 per month plan now provides 50MB of international data (up from 20MB), the $49.99 plan will let you have 125MB (up from 50MB), the $99.99 plan promises 275MB (up from 100MB), and the priciest of them all, $199.99 a month, will offer up a whopping 800MB (up from 200MB). The 800MB … Read more

After 10 years, I'm done waiting for TiVo

The last straw broke last month, when, after a DSL outage, I could no longer connect to the TiVo service.

I got the dreaded N17 error message that says, "Failed while negotiating." The only support guidance TiVo offers is (I'm not joking) to unplug the TiVo and plug it back in. Nothing helped. I trolled forums, restarted my modem, changed my router DNS settings, rebooted over and over, even switched to another TiVo, and connected to a Sprint Overdrive, just to troubleshoot and get guide info. I just couldn't get it working. I tweeted TiVo for … Read more

CTIA day 1: Where's T-Mobile; talk of spectrum crunch

ORLANDO, Fla.--Two big takeaways from day 1 of the CTIA 2011 trade show here:

There are essentially three major U.S. carriers now: AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint Nextel. T-Mobile's presence here is minor. Carriers need more wireless spectrum.

To the first point: AT&T's proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA was announced just this past Sunday and it still needs to go through a stringent regulatory approval process. But judging from the CTIA show, the No. 4 U.S. Wireless carrier seems largely left out of the industry discussion.

On the CEO panel this morning with CNBC's Jim Cramer, … Read more
