Penguin, the fabled English publisher, is plunging head first into the world of iPad content. Not iPad books, exactly, as these things are not recognizable as books in the normal sense--they are closer to games and full-fledged apps. Even in the case where they are adapting existing print books, there is enough new stuff going on where it diverges significantly from what we normally think of as "book". More details leak on Microsoft's 'Courier'

More details of Microsoft's rumored dual-screen "Courier" tablet emerged on Friday, including a rumored ship date of later this year, according to a post on Engadget.

According to the Web site, the product will ship later this year, is roughly 5 inches by 7 inches when closed, runs a version of the Windows CE operating system, and uses an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor.

A Microsoft representative declined to comment on Friday.

iPad to hit the U.S. on April 3

Eager for the Apple iPad? You'll finally be able to get your hands on the tablet in the U.S. starting Saturday, April 3.

Apple announced Friday that the Wi-Fi version of the iPad will launch in the United States on that date, followed by the Wi-Fi + 3G edition later in the month. Additionally, both versions will hit Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, and the U.K. in late April.

Report: iPad suppliers deny any delays

Denying a report of delays, iPad component suppliers say they are on schedule to deliver parts to the manufacturer.

The suppliers said that Foxconn, Apple's longtime manufacturing partner, should be able to deliver 600,000 to 700,000 iPad tablets in March, according to a DigiTimes report on Wednesday. The suppliers also predicted that 1 million iPads can be delivered in April, as production ramps up.

Valve games coming soon to a Mac near you

A few months back, I searched high and low for a few decent Mac games in preparation for a series of long flights and found myself looking at titles that were long surpassed by their PC brethren. Titles for the Mac are a dismal representation of what's going on in gaming.

But it looks as if that's about to change.

AT&T CEO sandbags iPad 3G subscriptions

One of the bigger surprises about the iPad when it was introduced was the sweet 3G prepaid subscription deal Apple and AT&T are offering.

But it turns out, AT&T's CEO doesn't anticipate many people will even use it.

At an investor conference Wednesday, Randall Stephenson predicted that Apple's tablet computer, which comes in both 3G and Wi-Fi-only flavors, will primarily be "a Wi-Fi-driven product," according to Reuters.

Awaiting the iPad ads

Many products launch themselves very much like an investment banker launching himself at a party. They strut in, chin up, determined to tell everyone how great they are in as loud a voice as possible. Somehow, they feel, everyone will hear, whether they like it or not.

Apple tends not to follow that principle. It doesn't create noise. It creates intrigue. It makes people feel positive--even, sometimes, against their better judgment. Since the very earliest days of its advertising, it has worked very hard at the art of being charming. It knows how to turn up at the party and say hello. It offers a bon mot here and a smile there, until by the end of the evening, it has won over many.

If Apple were a politician, it would win quite a few elections (it wouldn't get involved in extramarital affairs in Buenos Aires, either).

Rumors are suggesting that Apple's latest attempt to influence our behavior and tickle us with the lightest of hands, the iPad, will be available at the end of this month.

Which means advertising, and probably quite of lot of it. Some say the ads will launch March 15. What might they look like? Well, yet another rumor has suggested that Apple shot one of its new iPad spots in a California diner called Jax on the Tracks.
