Nothing says 'I love you' like a $20,000 iPad

The iPad might be an expensive device, but Mervis Diamond Importers has done its part to ensure Apple's pricing will always look cheap. The company announced on its site recently that it will offer a Diamond iPad for $19,999.

According to the site, the Diamond iPad boasts 11.43 carats worth of diamonds displayed in a "micro-pave styling." Mervis states that the diamonds are graded highly in color and clarity.

That's great and all, but I find the device a bit ugly with all those diamonds.

Unfortunately, Mervis didn't say which version of the … Read more

Apple loses key chip executive

Dan Dobberpuhl, the PA Semi founder and CEO who came to Apple with the acquisition of his company, has apparently jumped ship to work at a chip-related start-up.

Apple acquired PA Semi in April of 2008 for $278 million. At the time, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the company was purchased to design system-on-chips for iPhones and iPods. Dobberpuhl was the leader of the team Apple hired.

Apple did not respond to inquiries about whether Dobberpuhl was still at Apple. Several sources said Dobberpuhl's departure was not recent and may have happened as long ago as last fall or … Read more

Apple says iPad pre-orders start Friday morning

Apple normally offers a very simple message about its products. Often, there's not even a tagline.

So it's curious that at Apple.com, the company emits these words: "A magical and revolutionary product at an unbelievable price. Coming April 3."

I know that this almost Wal-Martesque offer is making many senses tingle. People are wondering how soon they can put in their iPad pre-orders.

Well, according to TUAW, Apple has confirmed that if you are poised over your Mac at 5:30 a.m. PST Friday, you will be able to go to Apple.com and … Read more

More possible iPad camera evidence surfaces

More clues are being discovered in hardware and software leading to speculation that the iPad can support a front-facing iSight camera.

According to PowerbookMedic's blog, the site received photos of what are supposed to be the final revision iPad midframe. The pictures appear similar to the ones that MissionRepair released about a month ago.

PowerbookMedic's photos show that the frame has Webcam "holes," but the holes are now slightly different in style and don't match the ones currently used by iSight models such as the ones in a Unibody Macbook--odd, since manufacturing companies often use … Read more

iPhone OS 3.2 Beta 4 yanks camera software support, developers gain gestures

As the iPhone OS ramps up to accommodate the upcoming iPad release, many are hoping for last-minute surprises, including a camera for every iPad. According to 9to5Mac, however, beta 4 of iPhone OS 3.2 isn't exciting so far.

The graphics in the previous SDK that lead everyone to think that the iPad might support a camera are now gone, according to screenshots posted on the Web site.

The only surprise, according to 9to5Mac, is possible new multitouch gestures: triple tap and a long press.

We don't think these gestures are new, however. Triple-tap seems identical to the … Read more

ARM expects tons of iPad-type devices

I'm among the many who will purchase an iPad on April 3. I'm not some huge Apple fanboy, but I did have a hand in a successful iPhone app last year and plan on creating more this year. I'll need an iPad to test it out and show it off.

But I'm also in lust with Microsoft's Courier. It drives me nuts that I know someone here in Seattle who has one and won't let me anywhere near it. Bastard.

Then there are the dozens of other devices about to hit. Make no mistake … Read more

Apple releases iPhone OS SDK 3.2 beta 4 for iPad

Earlier today, Apple released another update to the iPhone SDK for the iPad, bringing the current version of that SDK to 3.2, beta 4. The update follows one released several weeks ago.

We have not yet heard about any new features in beta 4, but these details will likely surface soon. (In the meantime, take a look at what beta 3 had to offer.)

This OS release appears to be updating approximately every two weeks, a pattern similar to that of the iPhone OS 3.0 launch in 2009. If the pattern continues, you can expect a firmware update … Read more
