Upgrading your Windows 8 system to Windows 8.1 is simple enough through the Microsoft Store, but if you need to reinstall it or run the update on more than one PC, it can be inconvenient and time-consuming since Microsoft doesn't give you the option to save the update files.
There's a trick, however, that allows you to download the official Windows 8.1 ISO from Microsoft's servers with your Windows 8 product key. With the Windows 8.1 ISO, you can create DVD or USB media to update a Windows 8 PC to Windows 8.1. … Read more
Nokia may be set to report another surge in Lumia sales if a new report from the Wall Street Journal proves true.
Citing the usual "people familiar with the matter," the Journal said Monday that Nokia sold at least 8 million Lumia Windows Phone handsets last quarter. The Microsoft Surface 2 is a definite upgrade over 2012's Surface RT. It's faster, with a sharper screen, and houses better cameras. If you're choosing between the older (still available) and newer model, the newer is the decidedly better option, even with its $100 premium. A far more appropriate question, however, is whether a Surface tablet in general is right for you.
There are two main issues with the Surface 2 that keep it from achieving true excellence. First -- with the notable exception of Microsoft Office 2013, which is bundled for free -- Windows RT is … Read more
Hard-drive space can become a precious commodity, especially if you're using an expensive solid-state drive. However, Windows 7 updates have zero respect for your space, and love to leave update packages hanging around after you're done installing them. That doesn't sound very nice, does it?
Fortunately, there's an easy way to clear out the clutter with tools that are provided in Windows itself (imagine that). While needing to do some extra work to save hard-drive space isn't ideal, at least the option is there. Here's how to clean out old update files, and regain … Read more
Microsoft has pulled temporarily its recently released Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows Store because of a vaguely explained "situation."
Microsoft pulled the RT 8.1 update some time in the morning on October 19, as reported by WinBeta.org, two days after it first made the software available for download by existing Windows RT users.
I asked Microsoft what led to the decision to pull the update and received the following statement from a spokesperson:
Microsoft is investigating a situation affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT … Read more
Remotely accessing a Windows PC can be a convenient way to access files and programs when you can't physically be at the same place as the remote PC. It's also a good way to troubleshoot problems with the remote PC as long as the problems aren't network-related.
There are some very good mobile apps already that allow you to connect to remote systems from your tablet or smartphone, like TeamViewer and Splashtop. Microsoft's RD client for Android, however, is free and doesn't require you to install an agent on your PC to use it. If … Read more
