Report: Nokia N9 not coming to the U.S.

Nokia will not be launching its anticipated N9 smartphone in the U.S., a new report from Engadget claims.

"After the very positive reception to the launch of the Nokia N9, the product is now being rolled out in countries around the world," Nokia reportedly wrote to Engadget. "At this time we will not be making it available in the U.S."

Nokia did not immediately respond to CNET's request for confirmation of Engadget's report.

Nokia announced the N9 in June. The device comes with a 3.9-inch AMOLED touch display and offers versions with storage of 16GB and 64GB. The smartphone comes in three colors--black, cyan, and magenta--and boasts an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and "HD-quality video capture."… Read more

Dell 1130n laser printer review: Outgunned by the competition

The Dell 1130n delivers the basic features we'd expect from a budget monochrome laser printer; it includes wired networking through the Ethernet port on the back, an ample 250-sheet paper tray, and a separate one-sheet manual feed tray for irregular media.

We wouldn't think twice about recommending you buy the 1130n if you see it on sale, but its simple design and modest functionality don't justify its $180 retail value. If you're on the hunt for a new laser printer, we'd instead point to the Samsung ML-2525W, an aesthetically similar device with the added benefit … Read more

Global climate talks can reach deal, says negotiator

Reuters

A global deal on a pact to succeed the U.N.'s main climate agreement is still within reach but will not be struck this year, with the pace of talks still far too slow, New Zealand's top climate negotiator said today.

Inevitably, there would be a gap after the Kyoto Protocol's first period expires in 2012, Minister of Climate Change Negotiations Tim Groser said in an interview after delegates from 35 nations attended two days of climate talks in Auckland.

Disputes between rich and poor on sharing curbs in greenhouse gases mean gridlock over the Kyoto Protocol, … Read more

Study: 802.11n support to grow 465 percent through 2015

The number of devices that will support 802.11n Wi-Fi is expected to explode in the coming years, according to a study from research firm In-Stat.

The study says 53 million consumer-electronics devices allowed for connectivity to wireless-N networks last year. That figure is expected to jump to 82 million next year and nearly 300 million in 2015, representing 465 percent growth over five years.

Early versions of wireless networking standards, including 802.11b and 802.11g, employed the 2.4GHz frequency band. However, 802.11n uses the 5GHz band as well. The technology, which offers more range than its … Read more

D-Link DIR-657 review: A totally new router that remains familiar

The HD Media Router 1000, model DIR-657, is the first in the Media router series that D-Link introduced at CES 2011, and it's a totally new router. At least on the outside.

Unlike previous routers, such as the DIR-655, DIR-825, and DIR-855, the DIR-657 doesn't have external antennas that stick up from its back anymore. Following the lead of Cisco and other vendors, D-Link now uses the internal antenna design, making the new router seem much more compact than previous models. The router's chassis is as sleek as many other new routers, and attracts fingerprints very easily. … Read more

Neat tweaks

XdN Tweaker is a freeware system utility that bundles together a wide range of useful tweaks and tools for Windows. Most of its tools are built-in Windows capabilities that XdN Tweaker collects into a single interface that makes them easier to access. It's got something for nearly every Windows user, too: Vista and Windows 7 users can restore features from previous versions, such as the Windows 2000 user control panel icon, while those users who prefer time-tested versions like 2000 and XP can add some up-to-date features.

Many of XdN Tweaker's tools require Administrative privileges, so we right-clicked … Read more

Cisco ships dual-band Wireless-N bridge

Cisco announced today the availability of its first dual-band wireless bridge, the Linksys WES610N Wireless-N Dual-Band Entertainment Bridge. This is similar to the TEW-680MB from Trendnet and the DAP-1513 from D-Link.

The WES610N offers four Ethernet ports and can connect to an existing Wireless-N network, either on a 5GHz or 2.4GHz band. This means you can connect up to four nonwireless Ethernet-ready devices to an existing wireless network. The device is designed for home entertainment products, such as TV set-top boxes, game consoles, and other devices that tend to come without built-in wireless adapters.

The new Linksys bridge features … Read more

Kingston Wi-Drive review: If size doesn't matter, capacity might

It seems I've been obsessed with size lately, so let's move on to capacity immediately. If for some strange reason you want to exactly double the limited storage capacity of the iPad, then the Kingston Wi-Drive would fit the bill perfectly.

The portable storage device is available in 16GB and 32GB capacities, which corresponds exactly to the first and second storage tiers of the iPad. The Wi-Drive is supercompact, about a third the size of the 500GB Seagate Satellite, which was the first wireless storage extender for tablets.

Though much smaller, the Wi-Drive offers one thing that the … Read more

Zoom H2n puts five mics in your hand

Due out in September, the Zoom H2n has the makings of a killer little portable audio recorder.

Like its predecessor the Zoom H2, the new model will be priced at $199, and keeps the same retro electric shaver design but in a more attractive black color pattern.

Inside, though, Zoom has packed a total of five microphone capsules, allowing it to capture up to four simultaneous channels of uncompressed surround sound. Those same microphones allow for three stereo modes, including a unique midside stereo pattern that makes use of three of the five mike capsules. … Read more
