Buick will play up mid-sized LaCrosse

DETROIT -- The future sweet spot for Buick's car line will be the mid-sized segment, the top executive for General Motors' Buick-Pontiac-GMC sales channel says.

The full-sized-car segment "has declined 35 percent this calendar year. Bringing more entries into a declining segment wouldn't necessarily be smart," said Susan Docherty, vice president of Buick-Pontiac-GMC.

Sales of the full-sized Lucerne totaled 50,799 in first 11 months of this year, a 34.1 percent drop from the year-ago period.

Buick's spotlight on the car side will be aimed at the redesigned, mid-sized 2010 LaCrosse, which debuts next … Read more

Six cars for your iPod

The days of keeping a library of tapes or CDs in your car are over. You walk around with an MP3 player, so why shouldn't you be able to use it in your car? Today's MP3 players can hold your entire music collection, so you don't have to decide which tunes to bring with you. Today's cars let you easily plug in an iPod or MP3 player and have full control over the device through voice command or the car's touch screen, and that's much safer than trying to manipulate the small controls on … Read more

Caddy relies on model updates over product development

Cadillac's wings have been clipped.

While General Motors wrestles with financial problems and analyzes higher fuel economy rules, the automaker has put on hold plans to develop a stylish Cadillac competitor to the mid-sized Mercedes-Benz E class, as well as the future of the Escalade SUV.

On the plus side, the CTS car will get more versions, a redesigned SRX crossover is on the horizon, and GM's high-mileage Volt technology likely will filter over to Cadillac.

Cadillac unveils the CTS Sport Wagon

With its CTS sedan proving so successful, Cadillac designed a coupe concept version for the Detroit auto show. And now GM's luxury brand takes it a step further by unveiling a wagon version, slated for production as a 2010 model, at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

The 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon uses the same Cadillac Art and Science design as the CTS sedan, including LED pipes in the headlight enclosures and starkly cut edges, but adds a hatchback and fold-down second-row seats, creating ample cargo room. Ever since reviewing the Jetta SportWagen we've anticipated a renaissance … Read more

Cadillac CTS-V design video

In this latest video from a series about GM designers, Cadillac design director Clay Dean talks about the CTS-V, the sport-tuned version of the new CTS. We gave the 2008 Cadillac CTS our Tech Car of the Year award, so the CTS-V is working from a platform we really like. In the video, Mr. Dean talks about his background a little bit, then gets up close to the car, pointing out specific design cues. Our favorite quote, "This is no boy racer, no hoorah, no frou frou. This is the real stuff."

Top five sports cars from Detroit

There was no shortage of sexy, sporty cars at this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Here are my favorites (in somewhat of a particular order):

5. Mazda Furai concept

The race-bred concept, which means "wind" in Japanese, is based on the Courage C65 chassis, which Mazda used in the American Le Mans Series two seasons previously. It has a three-rotor rotary engine that's capable of churning out 450 horsepower. And while it looks awesome, I'd say the chance that it goes into production is pretty slim.

4. 2009 Cadillac CTS-V

Cadillac CTS wins CNET Tech Car of the Year

The 2008 Cadillac CTS has beaten out stiff competition to become this year's CNET Tech Car of the Year. With its sculpted new profile and its arsenal of cabin technology, Caddy's revised entry-level sedan impressed both the judges and CNET's readers, who ranked it above the likes of the 2008 BMW 5 series, the 2008 Audi A6, and even the Mercedes-Benz CL550.

The CTS differentiated itself from the competition with a range of innovative entertainment and information features including its ability to pause and play live radio, as well as its live weather information feed. Other tech … Read more
