RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie unveiled BlackBerry Tag today at the GITEX conference in Dubai. BlackBerry Tag is an NFC-based app that will let BlackBerry customers share information simply by tapping their BlackBerrys together. You can also add friends directly to your BBM list this way.

This sounds a lot like Bump, an iOS and Android app that transfers information in a similar way. Health and wellness firm Zeo's labeling of sleep problems in America as an "epidemic" might not be hyperbole. Some 64 million of us grapple with sleep issues every night, and another 49 million struggle at least a few nights a week, according to the firm's analysis of U.S. Census data.

Zeo, which first caught our eye in 2005 under the name Axon Labs with an alarm clock called SleepSmart, now offers a highly evolved mobile sleep system that employs a wireless headband to track all known sleep phases, including Light, Deep, and REM sleep.

The Zeo Sleep Manager then sends the resulting sleep data directly to the user's mobile device (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and soon Android-based smartphones), which then syncs to the user's online Zeo account, where a ZQ sleep score that summarizes sleep quality is calculated. Engineers at the University of Utah predict that, in about five years, a network of wireless transceivers around a bed will be able to measure breathing rates without a single tube or wire being connected to the patient.

The uses of the system, which the team has dubbed BreathTaking, are obvious: patients in post-op, infants at risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or even people with sleep apnea.

Just in time for Google Wallet's official launch, Samsung has prepped an update for the Nexus S 4G so you will soon be able to use the smartphone to pay for items at participating stores.

The Samsung Nexus S 4G for Sprint is currently the only handset to support Google Wallet and features an embedded NFC chip that allows you to pay simply by tapping or swiping your phone. Earlier this year, researchers at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany, published a study identifying genetic markers found in people's stomachs that appear related to obesity and other diseases.

Verizon Wireless today launched Verizon Video, which is a new version of its V Cast Video service. Like its predecessor, Verizon Video is an on-demand video application that partners with a variety of providers to stream archival or live television footage. Content includes 250 full-episode TV shows and clips from ABC, NBC, CBS, Comedy Central, Animal Planet, and other channels. You can also pay for premium content if you want live sports coverage from NFL Mobile, NFL RedZone, NBC's Sunday Night Football, and NFL network.

The app is currently available for download from the Android Market on 4G LTE and certain 3G smartphones. You can get a free preview with NFL and IndyCar clips, at which point Verizon will prompt you for a $10 monthly subscription, or you can try out the app for 24 hours for $3. Wearable, connected fitness monitors are a dime a dozen these days. But developers of NewYu, a monitor that will be available in September, claim they've got an edge on their competition.

The device, which is meant to clip to clothing on the torso or to a pocket, is purported to provide a more accurate view of calories burned by tracking, and differentiating between, all movements throughout the day.

In other words, NewYu knows if you've been running or walking, cooking or cleaning, shopping, or (presumably) mating...You get the idea. Actually, Van Krueger, CEO of parent company Wellcore, tells me they decided to steer clear of the "mating" category, but that it will register as low-, medium-, or high-impact aerobics, depending of course on the intensity of the, shall we say, heat of the moment.
