The time has come once again for the ghosts and goblins to roam the streets for sweets. But if trick-or-treating is no longer your thing and you'd rather stay in, Download.com has got you covered with some freebie games for creating your own scarefest -- without leaving the house. One common utility for troubleshooting problems in OS X is Activity Monitor, which will display the system's running processes and various statistics about them, including the useful percent CPU usage and memory footprint of each. This information allows you to quickly assess whether a program is stable or if it may be experiencing an error that is impacting the system.
In the past few versions of OS X, Apple has not changed Activity Monitor much; however, once you install OS X Mavericks you will see significant changes.
For one, the program's tabs are now along the top instead … Read more
Last year when Mountain Lion and Windows 8 were released, I wrote a piece comparing the Mac and Windows operating systems, and concluded that Apple took the better path by keeping its tablet and desktop operating systems separate. With Windows 8 Microsoft gave its operating system a complete makeover, asking that people change the way they use their computers. Now that the two operating systems have updated with Mac OS X Mavericks and Windows 8.1, I thought I should take another look at both to see if the update did anything to change my mind.
For full disclosure, I … Read more
The most coveted phone today (at least for iOS users) is undoubtedly the iPhone 5S gold (I just ordered mine, and it's on three weeks' back order!). The most coveted award in Hollywood today remains that gold-plated Oscar. While actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars front man Jared Leto doesn't have either, that'll certainly change in a few months. I predict a Best Supporting Actor win in his future for his credible, Gotham Independent Film Award-winning portrayal of HIV-positive transgender woman Rayon in "Dallas Buyers Club."
Out November 1 in limited release and November … Read more
As part of its OS X Mavericks release, Apple has included version 7 of its Safari Web browser, which not only offers compatibility with the new operating system, but also brings some enhanced features. One of these is a new plug-in manager that allows you to enable or disable plug-ins, either globally or on a per-site basis.
While the technologies built into Apple's Safari browser are relatively safe and constantly updated, some of the notable security breaches have come from the use of third-party plug-ins such as Java and Flash, among others. Since a good portion of Web content … Read more
Catching Safari up to Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome, Adobe Systems has put its Flash Player plug-in into a sandbox for better security protection on Apple's browser, too.
"With this week's release of Safari in OS X Mavericks, Flash Player will now be protected by an OS X App Sandbox," Adobe platform security strategist Peleus Uhley said Wednesday in a blog post.
Sandboxing restricts the privileges that software gets, for example prohibiting it from writing to a storage device or tampering with data in memory held by another program. Such limits make it harder for malware … Read more
Eight years after Adobe Systems acquired Macromedia for $3.4 billion, in part for its Flash technology that vanquished the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) format, the company has released an open-source project called Snap.svg designed to bring some Flash-like characteristics to the Web.
Flash is slowly being squeezed off the Web -- at least newer parts of it -- by the fact that it doesn't run on mobile devices and that browser developers are starting to banish plug-ins. Adobe has redirected a lot of its staffing accordingly to Web standards that work in browsers without plug-ins, and SVG … Read more
DxO Labs announced its new Optics Pro 9 software Wednesday, an update the company believes does a better job stripping out noise than rivals such as Adobe Photoshop and Apple Aperture.
The software's Probabilistic Raw Image Enhancement, or Prime, takes more time than other noise-reduction algorithms, but it can detect finer details and accurate color amidst the noise speckles that afflict digital photos taken at high ISO sensitivity settings. DxO said the technology goes a full stop beyond the competition, meaning that it could cut noise from a photo taken at ISO 12,800 as well as a rival … Read more
When consumers said "The blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice," they sure weren't talking about apps. With far fewer applications at their fingertips than iOS, Android, and Windows phone users, BlackBerry aficionados, who just can't do away with the much-prized keyboard, are missing out on much of the latest and greatest in mobile software. Former Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver bassist -- currently with Walking Papers -- Duff McKagan is one of the loyalists who's unwilling to give his device its walking papers.
Speaking of Walking Papers, the rock quartet's self-titled debut … Read more
