Staples ups notebook war with $399 unit plus printer

Sound the horn and unleash the hounds of bargain hell!

Earlier this month, Wal-Mart unveiled a $398 Compaq notebook. Staples is now doing them one better by offering a similar notebook for the same price but tossing in a free printer, according to Black Friday 2006. The regular price for the laptop is $730. Consumers have to put up $69.98 for the printer but you get a rebate for $70. Despite the bad reputation for rebates, I've received every one I sent in for in the last two years.

The notebook comes with a Turion processor, a 60GB … Read more

Smallest and lightest laptop, sort of

Even though we rail against tiny products that defy common sense, we still like small laptops (we're an enigma). So we naturally clicked on Pocket-lint's headline trumpeting a "smallest and lightest" notebook from U.K.-based Evesham.

The dimensions are certainly small enough for a laptop with 12.1-inch screen: It measures about 11 by 9.4 inches and 1.4 inches thick. But the "Light Book" tips the scales at more than 2.6 pounds--not tubby, but certainly nowhere near as light as Sony's recently announced laptop under 2 pounds.

ASUS bulks up with new game laptops

ASUS, for the record, isn't just about Prada accessories and Lamborghinis. Showing that it can back up beauty with brawn, the Taiwanese computer maker late Friday announced two new laptops targeted specifically at hard-core gamers.

The G1 and G2 notebooks, with their respective 15.4-inch and 17-inch screens, are designed to take on even powerful game-oriented desktops. In addition to an Intel Core Duo processor, ASUS touts their advanced graphics, gaming hot keys, long-lasting batteries and various high-speed wireless options, including Bluetooth 2.0.

Fareastgizmos, which first reported the new laptops, adds that their "Game and Night View … Read more

LED lets you type in the dark

MyLight has launched a battery-powered LED lamp that's designed for books but will work with laptops as well. The MarkLight has three LEDs and will last up to 40 hours on two AA batteries. Made of real leather, the $20 lamp (nylon, fake leather, and plush versions will be available for $15) looks like it will satisfy non-MacBook users who want to type on their laptops in the dark.

Dell lists AMD notebook on site

Dell is getting ready to hit the Advanced Micro Devices trifecta with a new notebook bearing AMD's Turion 64 X2 processors. An ordering page, spotted by the ever-cheeky Inquirer, lists three Dell AMD notebooks for sale.

Three different configurations of a 15.4-inch widescreen Inspiron 1501 notebook were listed on Dell's site. Two of the notebooks use a Turion processor that doesn't appear on AMD's pricing page at the moment, the single-core MK-36 processor. You can upgrade to faster dual-core versions for either $50 or $100, depending on the size of your wallet. The base price … Read more

Rugged laptops for cubicle escapees

Those of us who toil under fluorescent lights might not immediately appreciate the value of "daylight-readable displays crucial for mission-critical and field-mobile applications." But people who break free from the cubicle cave and labor in the actual light of day will likely perk up at that description by Panasonic, which just introduced two new rugged Toughbook notebooks that it says have the brightest screens around.

The CF-19 convertible tablet PC features a 550-Nit screen with a new low-reflection coating (nit is a measure of brightness, with one nit equaling one candela per square meter). The CF-30 clamshell notebook (… Read more

New Shuffle, Intel-ready iBook predicted for MacWorld

The anticipation is already building for January's MacWorld Expo, when Apple watchers are predicting the introduction of both a new, even smaller iPod Shuffle and an Intel-ready iBook.

American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu has heard the new Shuffle will be smaller than a stick of gum and could come in multiple colors, including black. The price points would be $99 and $129 with storage capacities similar to current models.

"We believe this could help offset seasonal weakness in the March quarter similar to last year when iPod Shuffle was introduced," he wrote in a report dated … Read more
