When managing a personal or community page on Google+ (Android or iOS), you may become curious if the people you follow are also following you back. As an avid Google+ user, I've seen people complain about the asynchronous following method, while others sing its praises. However, if you're really trying to do some self- or brand-promotion, you probably want to know when followers lose their interest.
When you're troubleshooting Internet connection problems, one of the first things you'll want to verify is whether the Web site is actually down or if it's just you. If it's you, it could be your Internet provider, your Wi-Fi router, or possibly the device you're connecting from (computer, smartphone, or tablet).
When you're on a desktop computer, you can use something like http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com or check the individual status pages from Google, Microsoft, and others. IsDown is an Android app that allows you to quickly check if a Web site is down … Read more
Since I started writing content for the How To blog, screenshots have become a staple of my work. Usually their purpose is to show the reader how to perform an action in a more precise way than words can express.
As you may imagine, I have tried a lot of different ways to take and save screenshots. The most basic method, PrtScr (Print Screen), still requires pasting the copied image into an editor and then saving it. While this is great because it is built-in, it makes the process more complex than necessary. Even though none of the screenshot utilities … Read more
Flipboard, the app that lets you tap and flip your way through digital magazines on smartphones and tablets, has come to laptops and desktops. You can now access your Flipboard account from a Web browser, complete with the flip animation -- for better or worse. You can also use the Web app to create your own magazines to clip articles for later viewing via a bookmarklet. But the magazines you create are kept separate from the rest of Flipboard on the Web, which makes the Web app a better addendum to the mobile app than standalone product.
A Web-based version of Flipboard goes live on Tuesday, bringing the flipping motion loved by millions of users to the desktop and beyond.
The new app means anyone can view, share and "flip" Flipboard magazine content online, a vision that's much closer to the company's beginnings, according to founder Mike McCue.
"Being able to take all that and bring it to the desktop and go back to our earliest roots is kind of cool," he said as he showed off the sleek new Web app, which looks remarkably like Flipboard's existing mobile apps. … Read more
Updated with comments from co-creator Luke Tipping.
I'm sorry to share this, but as they say, misery loves company.
Four well-meaning Brits got together and launched SeeYourFolks.com on July 16. Since then, every person who has visited the site has felt a lump in his or her throat. After answering a few seemingly innocuous questions, visitors are presented with a number. In my case, a horrifying number that was shockingly low, because I live across the country from my parents and am -- I guess -- a terrible child who doesn't visit enough. This number is generated … Read more
Urchin Tracking Modules, or UTMs, are tracking tokens added to URLs. They are a tool used by Google Analytics to help calculate the unique number of clicks on a specific link, navigation choices on a Web site, and how much time is spent looking at it. The namesake comes from Urchin Software, a company Google acquired in 2005. Google Analytics borrows a great deal of its structure and features from Urchin 6.
To get started, you'll just need to install a copy of the respective add-on for your Web browser.

The Khronos Group announced OpenCL 2.0 on Monday, an update designed to give graphics chips more independence and therefore power when running general-purpose software.
OpenCL provides a standard mechanism for software to tap into the computational power of graphics chips, and the Khronos Group standardizes it. It announced a provisional 2.0 specification the Siggraph 2013 conference this week, planning to make it final after a six-month feedback period.
Graphics processing units (GPUs) are geared for graphics chores, of course, but they're also becoming steadily more capable of handling jobs ordinarily assigned to the general-purpose central processing unit (… Read more
Newer versions of Chrome spruce up the New Tab page by adding some shortcuts to your most-visited Web sites or Chrome apps. A previous extension I wrote about, New Tab Page adds the weather, some headlines, and links to Chrome apps. Onefeed does all of this, plus a custom newsfeed and social media updates from Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and Instagram. You can also attach your Dropbox account, if you really want to.
Apple's developer Web site has been down for maintenance in the past, but the latest is a doozy.
The site, which is home to software downloads, documentation, and forums for Apple's software developers has been unavailable for more 30 hours, leaving users hanging.
"This site is undergoing maintenance for an extended period today," links to the members section of the Mac and iOS Developer Web sites read (pictured above). "Thanks for your patience."
As a result of the outage, several developers have turned to Twitter to speculate on the cause, with some blaming the … Read more
