CNN recently reported on the "death" of the home stereo system, and while that's an exaggeration, few people -- young or old -- have "stereos" anymore. CNN was asleep at the wheel on this one; precious few folks have had stereos for decades. Music is now almost always consumed in cars, and over phones and plastic computer or Bluetooth speakers. If there's an imminent "death" on the horizon, it will surely strike MP3 players and iPods. Phones have already taken over as the portable music players of choice. Do you know anyone … Read more
"Star Wars" celebrations are known for offering exclusive merchandise as special lures for attendees. Sometimes, those exclusive items sneak out and become available to the general public. That's what happened with the limited-edition Death Star soccer ball.
ThinkGeek is selling a small quantity of these exclusive balls that were originally offered at "Star Wars" Celebration Europe. Naturally, they were originally called the "Celebration Europe Death Star Football." Other European items may be destined to stay exclusive, like the Death Star paper lantern and Endor speeder bike floaty pen.… Read more
As was the case with many "Star Wars" fans, the prequels left me feeling cold. They just didn't have that sense of excitement, life, and pluckiness of the original films. I felt alienated by the CGI and the mere sight of Jar Jar Binks. I've had some difficulty putting my disappointment into words, but now Portland, Ore., ad agency Sincerely Truman has summed it all up for me in a two-minute video aimed at J.J. Abrams.
Abrams has accepted the major responsibility of carrying "Star Wars" forward. He has a massive legacy to live up to, but he also has to overcome the missteps of the prequel films. I don't envy him the task, but if anyone is up to it, he is. I sure hope he's paying attention to Sincerely Truman's sweet and simple, "4 Rules to Make Star Wars Great Again" video.… Read more
In journalism, there's something called a lede, which is just another word for the main or most important part of your story. Normally you want to lay it out for the reader in the first sentence or two. Obviously, I'm hesitating here.
That's because I can't decide if it's more important that researchers at MIT and Harvard have just managed to create a previously unobserved form of matter by getting photons to bind together into molecules, or the fact that the result is basically a real-life lightsaber -- that could be part of a quantum computer one day.
Actually, I think what this story is really about is...friendship.… Read more
Angry Birds Star Wars II (iOS|Android) is a sequel that continues the "Star Wars" theme as you fling birds at evil pigs, but this time the game explores the prequel movies, with new birds like Jango Fett, a young Obi-Wan Kenobi, and even characters from the "Pork Side." Whether you're playing for good or evil, this installment has all the same mechanics as the rest of the games in the franchise, but instead of getting boring or repetitive, it still manages to be fun.
By now just about everyone has played or seen Angry … Read more

After a long, hard day at work, you deserve to come home to the welcoming "arms" of a somewhat-life-size-but-not-really AT-ST Walker from "Star Wars." So go ahead, click over to eBay and pick one up for $15,700.
The 16-foot-tall Walker replica is located in England, so you'll have to sort out the shipping arrangements, but it will be worth it. It probably won't fit inside your house, so I would recommend putting it in the front yard as the world's most awesome lawn ornament. It's weather-proofed to hold up to the UK rains.… Read more

The Zebedee LIDAR laser scanner reminds us of that scene in "Prometheus" where David laser-scans the inside of those creepy caverns. Well, Australian scientists are doing that in the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Iran wants to launch a poor Persian cat into space, while Volvo is training hamsters to drive trucks with the automaker's new power-steering technology. This is the world we live in. All that and more on this week's episode of Crave. … Read more
It's the eternal struggle of good versus evil, but in the end, only one thumb can truly triumph. To emerge as victor, you will need to train hard with your Jedi master teacher, the "Star Wars Lightsaber Thumb Wrestling" book.
The book from Chronicle Books is actually more of a kit. It includes two mini-lightsabers for you and an opponent to strap to your thumbs using Velcro. Two thumb-sized holes go all the way through the book, giving you the proper distance between battling digits.… Read more
If you ever wondered who had the world's largest "Star Wars" collection, Guinness has cleared up any uncertainty.
The "Star Wars" films have inspired collectors of memorabilia in a way that few other movie franchises have achieved.
It therefore takes something special for one individual to be named as having the world's largest collection of memorabilia related to the series. … Read more
