Mood phone analyzes your emotions

If you crossed a mood ring with a cell phone, what would you get? More importantly, why would anyone think of such a thing?

The people at Panasonic and NTT DoCoMo have apparently done just that, and the result is a mobile phone that changes color depending on your emotional state. The key to this bizarre feature is something called the "Feel Talk" function (so Japanese), which analyzes your voice tones and patterns while you're conversing.

Depending on what kind of day you're having, according to Gear Live, the phone can show "10 variations of … Read more

An LED lamp for Captain Kirk

Maybe we had phasers on our minds lately (a frightening thought), but the first thing we thought of upon seeing this lamp was the USS Enterprise.

Our weird fixations aside, the Mix Lamp from Luceplan is worth noting not just for its galactic appearance but also its practicality. According to Treehugger, the LED lamp has a life span of 50,000 hours while consuming only 5 watts of power. Unfortunately, it would probably take longer than that to offset its $472 price.

Penguin fever hits the design world

Did you cry during "March of the Penguins?" (I heard a rumor that fellow Crave expert Mike Yamamoto did.)

Are you going to head to the local cineplex to see "Happy Feet" while all your friends are lining up to see "Casino Royale" next weekend?

Are you into the idea of cute light-up electronic animals, but are kind of creeped out by the "smart" Nabaztag bunny?

Do you think the Nabaztag bunny would've been a little cooler if it were, say, a penguin?

Sadly, there isn't a "smart penguin&… Read more

Clock mimics sunrise, sunset

You may think you have time. You don't. It's almost November. That's why I suggest bookmarking this in the holiday ideas folder on your Web browser. You mean you haven't started one yet?

The Verilux Rise and Shine Natural Alarm clock is like the Wake-up Light, but with a few more bells and whistles. The lamp/alarm clock will both wake you up and try to put you to sleep. For morning, set the clock so that sunlight and wake-up noises gradually increase over a 5-, 15-, 30- or 60- minute period. When you go to … Read more

The loudest lamp. Ever.

If you're too cheap to buy actual speakers for your MP3 player (or other portable music device), why not just combine it with a common household furnishing?

That's what the folks at Adesso were thinking too. The result? A desk lamp. That plays music.

If you guessed its moniker would be "iLamp," you are (unfortunately) correct. Each iLamp is essentially a speaker system with six lamp variations sprouting out of the base, which it better be when asking people to shell out $89 for one. The models have cutesy names like Tempo, Boogie, and Rock On!, … Read more
