Rhapsody, a pioneer in the digital-music subscription market, has laid off 15 percent of its staff -- about 30 employees -- including President Jon Irwin, as it struggles to compete in an increasingly crowded sector.
Rhapsody International, the parent company of the on-demand music service, revealed the cuts Monday while announcing that Columbus Nova Technology Partners, an investment company that owns the maker of the Rock Band game franchise, had taken a significant stake in the company. Online subscription music service Rdio plans to launch a free, ad-supported music service as part of a partnership with radio station operator Cumulus, according to The New York Times.

The music industry is turning up the volume in its battle against digital broadcasters with a lawsuit that accuses SiriusXM of not paying royalties on music recorded before 1972.
Major labels Capitol Records, Sony Music Entertainment, and Universal Music Group Recordings, along with indie label ABKCO, sued the satellite radio company in a California court on Wednesday.
