Apple owes Crave money

It's always been clear that Apple Inc.'s real genius lies not so much in its products but in the way it markets them. And what's genius about it is how Apple gets every tech media outlet (CNET included) to do the work for them. A Harvard Business School professor has theorized that Apple benefited from $400 million in free publicity from the media coverage of the iPhone launch. In a recent USA Today story by Jefferson Graham, professor David Yoffie said the media hype surrounding the iPhone launch was like nothing seen before. "No other company … Read more

Apple says your cell phone is worthless

From the very moment Steve Jobs unveiled the Apple iPhone at MacWorld two months ago, every corner of the tech world has been buzzing that the thing would be too darned expensive. Indeed, we said the very same thing in our initial analysis of the device. Apple is asking a lot of people to pay $599 for the 8GB version of the iPhone, particularly when that also comes with a two-year contract to Cingular. And what's more, a few studies conducted since January indicate that very few people (one study cited just 1 percent of respondents) would pay that … Read more

And the Oscar goes to...Crave

It's Oscar time! Well, it was a week ago, anyway. Tom Merritt and I have the gadgets that those celebs should have received in their goodie bags! Here are some of our favorites:

The iPhone: Fake it till they make it

By the time the iPhone launches in June, its user interface may be old news.

The iPhony skin for Palm OS mimicked iPhone's interface, but it was mostly a skin-deep imitation. More iPhone skins were developed for other phones. One also was created for Windows Mobile, but it was yanked for legal reasons.

The latest skin we've seen is the most full-featured of the rip-offs.

YouTube user tzywen has created an impressive iPhone interface for Windows Mobile, complete with a sliding unlock button and one-touch launch buttons for several apps. Of course, it also mimics the iPhone's … Read more

Last night's iPhone commercial from the Oscars

Many of us here at Crave are iPhone skeptics, but we still think that Apple sure put together a cool commercial for the pricey handheld device. Featuring famous movie and TV scenes of people answering phones--from Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate to Lucille Ball to "The Dude" from The Big Lebowski--the ad premiered last night during the Oscars.

Happy viewing!

3G iPhone slated for next year?

The Apple iPhone rumors just won't stop! Now that the months of speculation about the iPhone's existence has been quelled, the rumor mill is churning again, and this time it's about the second revision of the infamous Apple phone. Yes, this second version of the iPhone is still very much in the vaporware stage, but that doesn't stop the recent rumblings (courtesy of AppleInsider) that the next iPhone will not only be available for our European friends, but that it'll also come with 3G support. If you'll recall, one of the biggest letdowns about … Read more

Prada does what it knows best: accessorize

iPhone comparisons aside, LG's Prada handset is sure to have at least one thing in common with its erstwhile competitor from Cupertino: must-have (and therefore overpriced) accessories. Just weeks after its official debut, we're already getting reports of a Bluetooth headset, though little else is known other than a purported May release schedule. SlashGear does note that it appears to have "a small LCD display, revealing info such as battery, volume and perhaps caller ID." And, of course, its coveted label is prominently displayed. (We mean Prada's, not LG's. Just FYI.)

Neonode launches touch screen phone at 3GSM

We still haven't bought into Steve Jobs' "buttons are bad on cell phone" theory, but other manufacturers seem to agree, as Apple's iPhone is far from the only handset with a screen-only interface. In fact, Neonode claims in a press release that Apple is following its lead in creating a button-lacking phone. The Swedish company is showing one of its newest models, the Neonode N2, at 3GSM in Barcelona. The petite (and admittedly cute) handset features onscreen navigation controls and an onscreen keypad. Sweeping your finger across the 65,000-color display opens menus, activates applications, and … Read more

Wax apples: iPhone letter deemed a hoax

Gossip about the superhyped Apple iPhone is like the latest Lindsay Lohan tidbit. You may not know that it's true, but it's worth repeating just the same. Such was the case for the Crave blog I posted two days ago that predicted a possible iPhone release date of June 15. At the time, we warned you that Apple's "leaked" FCC letter could be a hoax, and yesterday our Phonescoop friends discovered indeed it was. As Engadget says, the document in question was actually a Photoshopped filing for Apple's Airport Extreme base station. Aw shucks. … Read more

iPhone to arrive June 15?

We all know the Apple iPhone will arrive in June but we still haven't received official work on the specific day it will hit stores. But just yesterday the MyiPhone blog posted a letter that Apple allegedly sent to the FCC in October. The "leaked" memo, which could be a big hoax, asked the FCC to withhold the iPhone's antenna information, schematic diagram, block diagram, and theory of operation from public disclosure indefinitely. According to the letter, those details contain proprietary information that would give "competitors an unfair advantage."

Apple then goes on to … Read more
