Online retailer promises unlocked iPhones

One of the most popular questions regarding the Apple iPhone asks whether Apple will sell unlocked models. So far, the consensus has been that such a move is unlikely, but much to our amazement, we noticed today that PureMobile.com, a online cell phone retailer, is touting unlocked iPhones on its Web site. It appears to be the 8GB version of the phone in black (is there any other color?).

Now before you whip out your credit card, we have to stress that PureMobile won't allow you to buy anything at the time of this writing. It only says … Read more

The Onion's favorite iPhone features

Since Apple has yet to reveal all the features of its upcoming iPhone, the satirists over at the Onion have taken it upon themselves to fill in the blanks.

Peruse their selections over here, but I did want to call out a few of my favorites to give you a taste.

• When moved from hand to ear, makes Lightsaber sound effects. • Has way, way more PRAM than the last thingy. • Comes with an iPhone hat, so people know you own an iPhone during the brief periods you're not using it.

AT&T calls for backup on iPhone Day

Eight days before the iPhone arrives, AT&T is planning for extra security and a flood of customers next Friday.

The company has hired 2,000 temporary workers to help keep things rolling on iPhone Day (previously known as June 29th), according to CNN. It doesn't sound like these folks will be pressed into explaining the intricacies of AT&T's monthly data plans or selling Bluetooth headsets, but instead they'll help make sure rabid iPhone fans don't bum-rush the doors in hopes of securing an iPhone.

A report yesterday said AT&T plans … Read more

Adobe on why it is hosting the iPhone developers camp, NDA

Yesterday we reported that Adobe plans to host the iPhone developers camp that will take place early next month (July 6th-8th). The gathering will be hosted at the San Francisco Adobe Office. We speculated that despite the lack of Flash on the iPhone initially, the decision to host was motivated by Adobe's desire to be at the forefront of Web development on all platforms.

The company has now issued an FAQ on the conference, essentially confirming this postulation. Excerpts:

Q: Why is Adobe hosting this event?

A: Adobe embraces any opportunity to support the Web community. We believe that … Read more

iPhone web simulator application for Mac OS X debuts

Marketcircle has released a Mac OS X application that simulates the size of the iPhone's screen, offering a built-in WebKit-based browser. Dubbed "iPhoney," the application can simulate the iPhone user agent, rotate to display pages vertically or horizontally, and show or hide the location bar. It cannot, however, simulate the actual WebKit limitations of the iPhone (no Flash, no Java, etc.)

Sites are rendered in a 320 by 480-pixel (vertical) or 480 by 320-pixel (horizontal) window, with a stylized iPhone frame. It's pixel accurate, meaning that it has exactly the same number of pixels on its … Read more

Apple, AT&T stores could change hours on iPhone day

Ever since we Apple confirmed the time and date of the iPhone launch, there's been a lot of speculation about whether AT&T and Apple stores will close for a short period prior to the release time to prepare for the expected onslaught of buyers. We'd be surprised if Apple pulled such a move with its retail locations--it hasn't done so in the past--but today Boy Genius told another story. According to a "leaked" AT&T document Apple and AT&T stores will close at 4:30 p.m. on June 29 … Read more

iPhone, You Phone, I Tube, YouTube

Apple sent all the kids a-twitter (not to be confused with the popular social networking site of the same name) by revealing that the iPhone is going to have a special H.264 YouTube player built-in.

The horny (as in antlers, please get your mind out of the gutter) one thinks this is awesome and that the iPhone will quickly become the mobile platform for watching William Shatner sing "Rocket Man".

But you say to the Macalope, "Oh, one of brown fur and deadly appendages, how can I score myself a piece of pocketable technology perfectly suited … Read more

iPhone to feature special YouTube player

Apple's made it official: the iPhone will have full-blown YouTube integration. According to the iPhone Web site, the much-anticipated handset will include "a special YouTube player that you can launch right from the home screen." iPhone owners can now load and browse videos from the video-sharing site as well as e-mail them to their friends.

This comes less than a month after Steve Jobs announced that the company's Apple TV set-top box would also have built-in integration for the wildly popular YouTube.

The iPhone, as we all know by now, hits stores at 6 PM ET … Read more

Adobe to host iPhone developers camp

We have learned that Adobe plans to host the iPhone developers camp that will take place early next month (July 6th-8th). The gathering will be hosted at the San Francisco Adobe Office (see this flickr search for some venue pictures).

Yesterday we posted an interview with the conference's founder, Raven Zachary.

Zachary told us that while it may come as a surprise to some that Adobe is hosting the conference (in light of the iPhone's initial lack of Flash capabilities), it makes sense when you consider Adobe's desire to be at the forefront of Web development on … Read more
